I worked at Manulife full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A great benefit package, there is a gym on location. They post the job range on each role and make it available to employees. Large enough that moving internally although challenging is possible.

    Cons

Manulife seems to have lost it's way over the last couple of years. They seem to have become more concerned in buying out other companies than nurturing their current employees. Maybe this is true of most public companies, but cutting spending on resources is not always the best way to raise your stock price.

    Advice to Management

Make roles not so manager dependent, a bad manager can lead to good employees leaving. Invest in company infrastructure, while having 30 people split two printers may be cost effective, it is inefficient. Same ideas with Workday and Service Now, try them yourself and ask is this truly working for your employees.

    Pros

I cannot think of anything positive to say about Manulife Asset Management Operations division.

    Cons

Please stay away from support oriented operations if you can. Most of the men are in their late 30's or 40's and some of them are just sleazy, look at women in a sleazy manner, with some wearing gold chains, and look and act like they could be a side kick in some God Father movie. Others, think they still work in 1990's corporate American with very alpha male attitude. Women, what can I say, some of them are very helpful, others are just nasty, gossipy, two faced, chornic complainers and vicious. The worst part is that management turns a blind eye and even encourages gossip and back stabbing. That said, there are other aspects of operatiosn that are actually good. For example, IT,compliance, marketing, sales and product development teams are superb! Ask to be taken around, if you interview and any position that provides day to day assistance or provides client oriented services like doing paper work for analysts, portfolio managers, client reporting, boarding stay away. I understand that you cannot attract the highly educated, and intelligent people to such positions but don't start hiring people who might be a potential liability to your firm.

I have been working at Manulife full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Solid growth in Asia with a keen eye on ethics and compliance in the workplace. Not many perks but what company does have them nowadays? Yearly bonuses paid for past 10 years.

    Cons

Bureaucracy, red tape, project management stagnates, IT is decrepid and Help Desk is not helpful. New employees are frustrated at the slow onboarding pace.

    Advice to Management

Health benefits cannot continue to be reduced. Although there is a goal to meet for shareholders, employees cannot be the ones who suffer as a result. Key decision makers need training to identify key contributors and develop ways to retain the right people. Promote from within.

    I worked at Manulife full-time

    Pros

    - Decent work/life balance
    - Work with some people who genuinely enjoy their work
    - The vast majority of people are cordial and friendly
    - Business casual
    - People sneak out early all the time

    Cons

For the immediate managers and their managers within my group, it is expected that lower level employees rush to open doors for them. I'm perfectly happy to open doors for others if I receive a thank you, but I haven't yet. Now... not only are you expected to open doors for them, you can never show that you don't want to open the door, so you'll have to smile like you mean it.

To be fair - one time, the CEO, who I didn't know was the CEO at the time, held the door open for me and insisted that I go first after we fussed for a few seconds. And he smiled like he meant it.

    Advice to Management

Upgrade to Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes is horrible.

    Pros

Nice work enviroment, nice management team, a lot of fun events, food courts are not bad

    Cons

They should not put accountants together with the acturies both in Fianace, the acturies get far more benefits than accountants, makes all the financial analysts feel so unfair. The reorg. is just throwing more work to all employees, what's the benefit?

I have been working at Manulife full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice co-workers, good benefits, flexible hours.

    Cons

The usual large financial company issues. Awkward people that have been pigeon holed and are now socially awkward. "Bosses" that will never be as important as they think they are. Not a huge deal though - a decent company to work for.

I worked at Manulife full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good industry experience. Opportunities to work from home are available. The flex center usually has a desk open. There are also a lot of volunteer opportunities.

    Cons

Outsourcing. Manulife bought the insurance arm and is laying the State side workforce off in droves. Growth is political like many large companies, but depending on what department you start in, growth opportunities can be scarce no matter how savvy you are networking.

    Advice to Management

Provide more training classes and promote lateral and upward movement within the company.
