    Pros

Hard hot work, it is like getting paid to work out. I lost 50 pounds in one year.

    Cons

A culture of blame. If a problem occurs the way to fix it at Maple Leaf is to blame it on one person, rather than find a way to keep that problem from happening once more.

    Advice to Management

Try to prevent mistakes by changing operating procedures. Stop blaming people for mistakes, and use the mistakes as opportunities to fix a problem in production. I saw the same mistakes occur on all seven production lines over and over during my year. No changes in operating procedures ever occurred, but many employees were blamed for the recurring mistakes.
Also senior management at the Roanoke Plant did not live up to the companies core values.

I worked at Maple Leaf Foods full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Large company, good CEO, espouses good values, committed to Sig Sigma, well positioned, Canadian company

    Cons

The culture is not filtering down through the ranks. Very dated management style, top down old boys network. Sig Sigma black belts are not utilized for CI, but rather for project management. A general lack of transparency. Managers don't have authority to pull reports out of SAP. Reminds me a lot of government in terms of red tape and general lack of commitments from Mgmt.

    Advice to Management

Engage your rank and file in continuous improvement, flatten out your hierarchy and stop treating Sig Sigma like its the silver bullet that will fix all your problems. Decentralize Sig Sigma and have your black belts report to the individual business unit so that they are actually engaged with the business. I could say a lot more.. but that would cost you.

I worked at Maple Leaf Foods full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Well known company
Plenty of challenges and interesting operations. Money is not bad

    Cons

Lack of common direction. Although it is heralded as a company that works as a team there is a lack of cohesion. Most departments work on their own for their own goals but with no interdepartmental communication. If you like teamwork look somewhere else

    Advice to Management

Practice the company values. They should not be meant only for performance reviews

I have been working at Maple Leaf Foods full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

salary is ok, they have benefits, not strict of when you come in for work, summer hours, dress your day

    Cons

sucks life out of you, they dont care about work/life balance, not enough recognition on lower level employees, people being rewarded are the favourites, good intentions but bad execution, unstable and always restructuring. Some people are kept with higher pay but are inefficient and lazy. Preference more on new grads or with diploma or designation and kept the more experienced stuck doing admin work and the new younger hires ask the experienced "admin" what to do and get paid the higher salary...this is unfair.

    Advice to Management

should look at your lower level employees and see if they are still passionate
