Great Work-Life Balance and Compensation but Lacking Loyalty

Mar 10, 2021 - Reservoir Engineer in Houston, TX

    Pros

Work-life balance, compensation, culture among individual contributors is awesome. Supervisors and lower-level management is usually supportive and empowering.

    Cons

Supervisors and lower-level management is very inconsistent (years of experience and how hands-on or -off they are). The same employee is often treated/recognized differently between managers leading to inconsistent feedback and direction.

    Reservoir Engineering

    Pros

Many great technical professionals at the office who know what they're doing, but...

    Cons

...Management seems to think they know better. Incompetent leaders with no backbone and no willingness to stand up for their people. Culture is now more cut-throat, focused on how staff can compete with one another vs working collaboratively. Management also unable to work with any type of diversity, and thus most diverse employees (female, different background, work style other than "the Marathon way") have either left or been laid-off. The result is a super toxic environment where work product is terrible. Oh yeah, and HR is incompetent, so if you want to talk about the problems you're facing...well, you're out of luck. Best to find your own solution.

    Run!

Jan 8, 2016 - Reservoir Engineer in Houston, TX

    Pros

This company offers flex schedule unmatched by any of it's peers. Pay is fairly competitive although there are certainly better-paying companies out there.

    Cons

Extremely political environment, especially since price of oil has started to fall. Add in incompetence of management (starting from the very top) and you quickly got enough reasons to run.

    Pros

At the time I worked for Marathon, Marathon was a great company with very high technical level and very good with its employees. It had great environment and great benefits.

    Cons

The Company had been through a period of transformation which I it is understandable that could have been difficult. I hope the process end up very well for Marathon

Not good for technically strong employees, Managers lack minimum technical depth and understanding

Oct 23, 2012 - Reservoir Engineer in Houston, TX

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Work/Life Balance is great. Flex days can be taken on any day of the week. Family friendly company. It is a great company if you lack technical depth and but can build relationships. You can spend your entire without adding any real value to company.

    Cons

Good technical work is never recognized. There is a bias in promotions. Managers lack technical depth and often promote people based on individual liking. There is no incentive to do good quality technical work. Most of Reservoir Engineers at senior level are technically challenged and can only do budget work. You will hardly ever find Reservoir Engineers presenting in technical conferences. Very little diversity - in terms international employees with higher degrees. Culture is not good for international employees with other nationalities. If you are dumb but a slick talker, this company is made for you.
