I have been working at Marathon Oil (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Salary, Bonuses, Benefits, Vacation, LTIP

    Cons

    Limited exposure with management; career opportunities are limited for some that are not "seen"; onboarding; roles & responsibilities not made clear;

    Advice to Management

Build relationships with employees. Have more of a presence in intergroup discussions. Take ownership of the issues at hand and address in a timely fashion. If all you do is delegate, then you won't provide much value. Talk out career advancement/opportunities.

I have been working at Marathon Oil full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very laid back, casual dress code, good starting salaries for entry level. Has multiple locations if you ever want to move

    Cons

Very much acts like a big company, you're pretty much just a number and middle management is very heavy here. Expect to be subject to the good ole boy system, lots of sexism.

Work ethic is poor, everyone leaves at 5 no matter what needs to be done for a meeting the next morning.

Management chooses favorites and there is a lot of nepotism and managerial incompetence

    Advice to Management

Management is very secretive, and likes to make reviews as convoluted and non transparent as possible.

They need to learn to express more appreciation for their employees.

I worked at Marathon Oil full-time

    Pros

Benefits were in line with the industry

    Cons

CEOs rating is 21% that should tell you something about how its being managed.

    Advice to Management

Fire the CEO and maybe the stock price might actually rise over $20

I have been working at Marathon Oil full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay is reasonable and can't beat the flex day policy, basically an extra month off every year on top of a normal upstream vacation policy.

    Cons

Highly politicized culture and top down management. Managers make decisions based on what they think their managers/analysts want to hear vs technical basis.
Pervasive low morale throughout the company due to heavy layoffs based on a poor imitation of XOM forced ranking system. HR initiates many policies and procedures based on what they think is best vs business needs, and has strong influence on CEO. Field locations very disconnected from the 'Houston tower'.
    Galleria location makes commuting rough

    Advice to Management

Stop the echo chamber meetings with other chiefs and talk to your Indians

    Pros

Good pay and benefits package. 9/80 Flex schedule is nice. Most recent manager was outstanding and a pleasure to work with.

    Cons

High stress environment, constantly having to jump through hoops to prove value/worth to the company. Currently no growth opportunities for geosciences. Strong disconnect between culture experienced as intern and culture experienced as full-time employee.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your people/company culture. Company seems to be on life support and searching for an identity. While times are tough, can't hurt to try and boost company morale. Let people know their work amounts to much more than just a job - or job security in these uncertain times.

I have been working at Marathon Oil full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

This company offers flex schedule unmatched by any of it's peers. Pay is fairly competitive although there are certainly better-paying companies out there.

    Cons

Extremely political environment, especially since price of oil has started to fall. Add in incompetence of management (starting from the very top) and you quickly got enough reasons to run.

    Advice to Management

BOD needs to clean up executives. This company will destroy itself if current management is left in place

I worked at Marathon Oil (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Now retired but while there the teamwork was outstanding. Work/life balance was perfect. I worked for them for 16 years and loved my time there - every day.

    Cons

"Reorganizations" are the norm. At least 2 or 3 in the past year. My remaining colleagues are on pins and needles not knowing when the next shoe will drop....

    Advice to Management

    Bring back Clarence Cazalot.

I worked at Marathon Oil (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Some very good young engineers and supervisors. Still have most of the groups treating service providers with due respect. Focus on HES in field operations. Decent benefits for now.

    Cons

Inability to effectively utilize engineering and leadership talents across organizations. Silo mentality. Lack of focus on production. Lack of mentoring do to assigning leaders with no production experience. Too focused on investigating bee sting and 1 stick recordable injuries and fresh water spills, than high potential near misses. Shrinking opportunities to develop employees due to creation of single focus, factory "well building" company design. Limited company growth opportunity.

    Advice to Management

If you have to get service company (Schlumberger) to design new structure of company, than top leadership is not competent for positions. Put more and competent people in production roles to maintain production and lower intervention requirements.
Need to hold HR accountable for poor decisions that destroyed moral and culture. Marching out 25-40year highly rated employees during layoffs with no time to say goodbye or thanks. That's a nice retirement thank you! Speaks volumes for young employees looking at career decisions.
