I have been working at Marathon Oil full-time

    Pros

    9/80 schedule, 4 weeks vacation

    Cons

Absolutely everything is at your manager's discretion (more like whim), non-existing
HR, elitist and unapproachable senior management, old-school methods and ways

    Advice to Management

Descend from the 41st floor and actually get involved with your employees, get rid of so many layers of management

I have been working at Marathon Oil full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Benefits are better than most companies. Restricted Stock is around 10-15% of your base pay vesting over three years. 401k match is 7%, Pension escalates from 7% to 9% and then 11% depending on age and experience. Bonus is from 10-20% of base salary depending on your review.

Medical costs about $4k a year with a $1600 deductible. Flex Days are nice, along with vacation being earned on Jan 1. for the whole year. no paycheck to paycheck accrual like most companies.

    Cons

Forced rankings for yearly review. Heavily focused on resource plays within the US. If oil drops and stays low again will probably lay more people off and potentially go out of business.

    Advice to Management

More portfolio diversification is needed. Scrap the Exxon Mobil review process as it is making good employees leave.

I worked at Marathon Oil full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great pay and benefits, in some areas outside the box thinking is encouraged.

    Cons

Inconsistent culture from location to location. I've worked at four different assets, three of the four had a positive, upbeat and open minded culture. One was just the opposite. Closed minded, especially about change and extremely judgmental.

    Advice to Management

Look carefully for those that are injecting negativity into the workplace and deal with them.

    Pros

Fast paced, work life balance, field locations treat employees like family, benefits.

    Cons

No direct path for promotion or advancement. Management can't make decisions and change strategy all the time. Lots of rework. CEO changed culture of family.

    Pros

I was able to have flexible hours and my employer was very easy to work for. Enjoyed working with and meeting all types of people.

    Cons

Had to work late sometimes but it added money to the paycheck. Also had to count cans and I didn't really enjoy that.

    Advice to Management

    Hire personable people.
