I have been working at Marathon Petroleum full-time

    Pros

Somewhat flexible work hours. Co-workers are great to work with, teams are great. Starting pay is relatively high, and bonuses can be huge if the company has a good year. Good benefits, especially on the 401k match. The company as a whole places safety and compliance as a priority. Overall, it is a good company to work for.

    Cons

Working hours can be extreme. Depending on what department you work in, you may find your life consumed by your work. There tends to be little to no employee recognition (some small tokens, but never anything that truly helps morale). There are very large differences in culture and environment depending on the site within the company.

    Advice to Management

The safety culture is good on the surface, and they keep up appearances, but some serious work needs to be placed on safety and a more intimate involvement of the safety department with the workforce. Employees need to be better recognized for their successes, especially when the company is gained significant revenue or cost savings.

I have been working at Marathon Petroleum full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company has amazing benefits. The pay is good for what I do. The company provides top notch equipment and training.

    Cons

Middle and lower managers are not the best at leadership. Some people are left in leadership roles that they aren't qualified for. The entire company is chronically understaffed in an effort to return money to shareholders (they call it efficiency, but it is more like backbreaking)

    Advice to Management

Shift your focus from shareholder first to customer, employee, then shareholder. The shareholders will still get their money, and probably more of it.

Large company, not a whole lot of freedom to be an individual thinker.

I worked at Marathon Petroleum as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

If you make it past the strict requirements/high standards and get an internship or co-op offer, you have a good chance to get a full time offer. Unless you are a total goober or are incompetent. They do a good job of providing real work, not busy work, as well as exposure to real-world team projects.

    Cons

The social atmosphere can be a bit stuck-up and a decent amount of people working there seem to care too much about keeping up with the Jones'. It is an oil company so if you value the health of our planet/the environment you have to justify it or deal with the psychological dissonance. There is a constantly feeling of having to perform and l worrying about make a good impression and not being judged.

    Advice to Management

Money isn't everything, paying well doesn't make it a good job and getting paid more doesn't make you better/smarter/more qualified by default.

I have been working at Marathon Petroleum (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Inclusive culture, average starting salary but the benefits more than make up for it.

    Cons

The college new hire process is stressful.I accepted the offer for a full-time position within Procurement but they weren't able to tell me my location or actual job function until 4weeks before my start date. Although the salary and benefits are great, procurement is very low on the ladder compared to other departments.
