I have been working at Marbles the brain store part-time for more than a year

    Pros

There are cool products. In my particular store, hours are flexible, but that might only be because I have a great, understanding manager. Focus was on matching customers to products they would like, as well as playing games all day to demo them to customers.

    Cons

Since the company made a bunch of changes (many of the original founders of the company have left in the year that I've been here), the company has gone seriously downhill. We're expected to have high conversion rates (number of people who come into the store vs. how many of them buy), high units per transaction, high overall transactions, and on top of it all make goal. If you have an excellent day but don't necessarily...

    Advice to Management

Be in our shoes for a moment. We're not selling automatons, we're people who are trying our hardest. Visit our stores and work there to see what it's really like. Many of us have been in retail for ages, and know how to push and pull with customers to get them to buy. But pushing customers to sell despite how many times they say no alienates both new and returning customers, not to mention it feels more like harassment...

I worked at Marbles the brain store full-time for less than a year

    Pros

People often told me, 'Wow, this must be a great job. You just get to play games all day.' At it's best, that is what you're doing. People come in needing to find something for a friend or family member, or just wander in killing time before a flight out of town, and you get them to surprise them with a joyful experience they want to walk out of there with and pass on to others. That perception of the job being...

    Cons

It isn't easy work. You have to be familiar with the rules of dozens of games well enough to be able to explain and demonstrate them to someone, and do so in a way that lets them grasp the concept and makes them want to buy it. There are a lot of job that require less of you and compensate you about the same. If the store hits its goals, there is a bonus paid out to employees on everything exceeding goal, but that's not...

    Advice to Management

The job is more sales than retail, and the compensation should be structured accordingly. Inventory should do a better job of ensuring popular stuff is always in stock and/or have less options. As one of my co-workers pointed out, a good restaurant has a small menu but guarantees all of it is top class.

    • "As far as retail goes, it is a good, fun place to work."

I have been working at Marbles the brain store part-time for less than a year

        Pros

There is a constant cycle of new products, so you will get to learn new games and have new items to be excited about. The people I have worked with are always great and a lot of fun.

        Cons

It gets a bit slow at times at my location when it 's not the holiday season and there is not always something to do while the store is empty or people are just playing. Often you can be the only one working so you can't even play the games, since many are 2 player.
