I have been working at Marchex full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Aside from a flexible work schedule, this position includes full health benefits, PTO hours and work from home options. Marchex is a company that advocates internal growth so if you're looking to learn more about other positions/departments there is always someone eager to help you.

    Cons

The compensation is a tad low for this position, but you are given opportunity and experience that most other companies would not give.

    Advice to Management

No advice at this time. My manager is positive, approachable and well versed in our product and team best practices.

    Pros

Great quality people throughout the company. There are lots of very talented people with really positive attitudes.

    Cons

Like a lot of places, there is some ambiguity these days with business activity and employment stability. But overall they seem committed to focusing long term and investing in the business.

    Advice to Management

Continue to communicate and involving your best people in guiding the company priorities. There are a lot of great people at the company and making sure they have a voice in the company direction will make the company more successful.

    Pros

    1. Marchex has the resources of a public company, but the disposition and attitude of a smaller, upstart company. Recent investments in call-based advertising products seem to be paying off, and the company has made some pretty savvy bets going into 2010 with the major lines of business.

    2. The office location is great, 5th and Pike. Previously, we had been in two buildings but we're consolidating on three adjacent floors in the next few weeks.

    3. New blood -- management has added a handful of senior leaders to the company in the last six months, people with experience managing large lines of business or product lines. They are bringing new and improved ideas to Marchex.

    Cons

Being in the advertising business, the company was hit hard by the recession. There were some layoffs in early 2009, and some lines of business were hit pretty hard last year. Some groups have taken longer to recover than others. Overall, the company is experiencing a pretty major turnaround in the positive direction, though.

    Advice to Management

The company is operating at its best when there is frequent, detailed communication around key initiatives and strategy. In 2009, this has seen an uptick, I'd like to see this continue to get a lot of focus from the management team in 2010.

    Pros

Marchex has done a great job of attracting tremendously talented and successful people and letting them execute against the company's vision. At the core, is a company whose culture cultivates critical thinking, execution and professionalism, teamwork, support and ingenuity. Marchex has positioned itself in a unique position to capitalize against some huge emerging opportunities as it relates to connecting businesses, both large and small, with consumers in a variety of meaningful and relevant ways. Since going public in 2004, Marchex has operated with the fundamentals of a publically traded company and the spirit of a start-up. Great place to learn, grow and excell.

    Cons

Be prepared to work hard. Some might shy from expectations, but those that think big, deliver results. Marchex has lofty goals and wants to be a thought and product leader. If you are content with the status quo this probably isn't the right place for you.

    Advice to Management

Stay on course and utilize the tremndous assets you have in place. The intelectual properties are intriguing and the product set is compelling. With the right focus, the opportunity is great.

    Pros

Marchex cares about what a company should: their customers and employees. While Senior Management can't address every issue and item, they absolutely listen and take action on most.

    Cons

The company is still defining itself.

    Advice to Management

Stay on the track you currently are of creating a highly inclusive culture.

    Pros

Company is half way through successful transformation. Focus on generating inbound calls for businesses is delivering tangible results in the form of revenue, partnerships, and products. Quality of hires in the last 12 months is comparable to Google and Amazon. Tons of Aquantive veterans looking to make history once again.

    Cons

Benefits are ok but getting better each year. Bottom 20% is competent but not much more. Company is not nearly as well known as it should be. Previous reputation as a domain parker is hard to move past for the cocktail party set.

    Advice to Management

Continue enhancing benefits, invest in Marchex brand, and keep hiring rock stars.

    Pros

Marchex is one of the few companies left that treats their employees like a non-expendable resource. They want you to be happy and to have healthy work-life balance - they feel it makes you more productive, and helps with employee retention.

    Cons

They pay less than the big software boys in the area, and have fewer perks than Google or Microsoft (but more than Amazon).

    Advice to Management

Good job so far - keep it up. The kind of growth we are seeing in the calls sector makes me proud to be part of the team.

I worked at Marchex full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Everything from Moral Events, Benefits, Employee Satisfaction, Fairness, Location. Everyone here always had a smile on their face. They company has grown immensely in the last two years and it doesn't plan to stop there. This is an excellent company to work for and there is no better time than now.

    Cons

The only think I could think of, is the lack of communication from the superiors. You have to kind of remind them once or twice about a few things, but other than that, there are no Cons for this business.

    Advice to Management

Try to communicate more with your employees. Keep them on level ground with what is going on around them.
