Appreciate the flexibility and regard for our safety

    Pros

Management has been wonderful and understanding during Covid. This has brought a true new meaning to work/life balance as many juggle careers, remote learning, and childcare. Work/life balance has always been a Marchex plus but this just shows how much leadership careers about well-being and safety. It's also great to work for a company with an exciting product suite.

The pay could be improved on

    Pay is Well Below Average

Nov 12, 2021 - Account Director in Seattle, WA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Opportunities for advancement although leadership sees this as an opportunity to save money on salary so expect way below market rate if you do stick it out long enough for a promotion

    Cons

Low pay and small infrequent raises. Leadership wonders aloud why we can’t hang on to talent (hint: it’s the low pay and infrequent raises)

    Too many executives.

Oct 6, 2021 - Engineer in Seattle, WA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

*Working from home was successful. Engineering delivered a lot. *Central downtown location in Seattle that is close to transportation and shopping *Amazing co-workers that put their heart in to what they do

    Cons

*Excessive amount of executives for the size of the company *Recent individual contributor layoffs when there are too many executives. We needed the IC's to deliver. *People leaving in droves *Lack of direction. *Rampant misogyny from the top. Women receive many lateral moves without raises *Hardly any diversity. *Tiny engineering teams trying to keep legacy software alive while also innovating. *The time spent addressing issues/outages is not taken into account when asking for delays. The date is the date. *Low wages

    Pivot Point?

Aug 2, 2021 - Technical Account Manager in Bainbridge Island, WA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Caveat to this review, the company is rapidly changing with new employees and products. This could be for the better or worse in the next few months. Interesting and innovative technology Decent benefits Career growth Flexibility - you’re generally expected to be available and working during standard business hours, but clients and offices are in various time zones so you can start earlier or later depending on your preference. You may have to accommodate those other time zones for the occasional meeting.

    Cons

Long hours/high workload High employee turnover High technical debt - products are often left incomplete to pursue other innovations. This leads to complex manual support behind the scenes in order for products to function the way clients expect them to.

Sinking Ship due to questionable management decisions + under-market pay

Jul 22, 2021 - Account Executive in San Francisco, CA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

-the company has products that customers truly need to operate their business -there are some great employees at the company with a lot to contribute in their roles

    Cons

-management would delay or avoid paying the sales team on commissions earned under the comp plan. this type of decision-making goes all the way up to the top (CFO and CEO) -the company forced changes to the comp plan then backdated to apply to deals closed under an existing plan -major layoffs across the engineering org spell trouble for product direction and execution going forward -VP and C-suite folks ultimately have to run every decision by the CEO Mike Arends. No one holds a real budget and can make decisions on their own. This is part of the reason the company has been bleeding top people due to under-market pay, and questionable financial decisions like delaying sales rep commission payments month after month -The company has a billing and collection problem, and is routinely months behind on collecting from customers. As a sales rep, this impacts you because you're paid on CASH collection, as well as "recognized revenue" -Since the company recognizes revenue over 12 months, they want to pay reps out the same way. So if you close a huge deal and the customer pays upfront, expect to be paid your commissions over 12 months. OH, and IF YOU LEAVE, YOU ARE NOT GIVEN THE TRAILING 11 MONTHS OF COMMISSION PAYMENTS. That is a dealbreaker in my book because it effectively lowers the real commission rate you're getting paid, which is already below market for every product line across the company. -culture and morale across the company are at all-time lows, which has contributed to the mass exodus across various BUs. Management has also announced unexpected layoffs so the people remaining aren't sure of their future with the company.

Thanks for your response! We are glad to hear that you get the opportunity to work alongside good people, and that it's a great place to expand your skillset. It's unfortunate to hear you feel we are doing a poor job of making employees feel valued. It's been tough switching to a purely remote environment and keeping employees engaged, but we hear you that we need to do better - and we are committed to that! Our people are our most valuable asset and we appreciate the feedback so we can continue to improve.
