    Positive Outlook

I worked at Marian University (More than 10 years)

    Pros

A great balanace of independence and support as an adjunct faculty. Wonderfully active small campuses. Students were eager to learn. Excellence was appreciated.

    Cons

I really have no "cons", it is a great place to work.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Marian University (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Getting to work with really great students to help them become better citizens and people. In general, the students are really great - and you can make a difference in their lives. You also have a fair amount of flexibility in what you teach and how you teach.

    Cons

Administration does not seem to have respect for faculty. Focus on hiring more and more upper management (VP, etc) and cutting faculty and faculty resources. Beginning to override faculty governance, which can be disastrous for any college.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the most important asset of any college - the faculty. Give them the ability to be the best faculty possible. Set up systems to be competitive in hiring great faculty.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Marian University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Caring professional colleagues. A true family atmosphere. Students who want to improve themselves and work to do so. Many first generation students who actively seek to become leaders.

    Cons

Leadership changes too frequently - a stepping stone for presidents and advancement officers - which results in a new plan and adjustments to the new "vision" every few years or so. Becomes daunting to "train" these leaders to understand the mission and dynamics of the university.

    Advice to Management

Accept and value who the university is for - enhance but do not change who the university serves. Remember, there are throusands of colleges and universities out there - enjoy the value found in this particular school.

    Pros

Faculty and staff are approachable; genuine committment to students and improving their experience and learning. Flexibility in work hours and vacations.

    Cons

Talks about excellence, innovation, and challenging students, but rewards loyalty, making cosmetic changes, and pleasing students.
The constant turnover in upper management means more time is spent on reorganization after reorganization than on organizational development.

    Advice to Management

When implementing change, consult the staff who will have to implement the changes to see if there are more cost effective and less personally disruptive ways to bring about same and/or better results.
