I have been working at Maricopa County (Arizona) full-time

    Pros

Some of the people you work with become your best friends, and there's some good outcomes for the animals. The benefits are good.

    Cons

Upper management sucks and favorites are played. Rarely do the different groups of jobs (business office, kennels, clinic, etc) work together, everyone disagrees and is told completely different ways to do certain things. People don't take responsibility if they do something wrong or make a mistake, instead they put the blame on someone else, making it a bigger problem. Many of the employees get attitudes and have very angry demeanors. The treatment of the animals isn't the greatest, employees don't work hard enough to get the kennels the cleanest they can, and the dogs just constantly get sick because they are held so long (some over two months before they are outcomed). There's a lot of petty stuff that goes on pretty much like highschool. No one gets in trouble for anything so nothing ever gets fixed. Customers get their way all the time, no one will put their foot down and actually be in favor of the company and enforce policies. This causes a lot of anger and confusion towards different groups of employees and management as well. There really are no raises unless you get promoted, which there really isn't any opportunity to.

I worked at Maricopa County (Arizona) full-time for more than a year

    Pros

There were no weekends or holidays so very good work/life balance. The health benefits were great and my colleagues were awesome.

    Cons

Pay is the lowest of the low and they don't give raises. I made more as a new grad nurse than I did while I worked there after having four years of experience. Starting pay is based on years experience so if you have 10 years experience, you'll always be stuck at that pay rate since no raises are given. So after you've been there for 30 years, you'll most likely still be getting paid the same rate as someone with 10 years worth of experience. Sucks. Oh and 11% is taken out for retirement which is a pretty decent chunk of take home pay. All in all, pay at the county is horrible.

    Pros

Great retirement and benefits for sure. Have spent a long time with the county and have enjoyed it for the most part. Made a lot of friends and worked with some great people.

    Cons

Maricopa County was a great place to work but seems to be going downhill as of late. I wish it wasnt but it is. No raises for years and no cost of living either really makes it hard.

I worked at Maricopa County (Arizona) full-time for more than a year

    Pros

State Retirement is good, there is plenty of opportunity to move positions since it is a large county, the people who work there are good.

    Cons

The pay isn't that great and there are no raises. Morale goes down because of this and the county loses a lot of great employees.

I worked at Maricopa County (Arizona)

    Pros

An employee can gain good experience in the environmental field and there are a lot of dedicated people in the rank-and-file that care about doing their jobs well.

    Cons

There is little professional training available, no raises, little or inconsistent management guidance and support and virtually no career advancement.
