I have been working at Marilake Education Centre

    Pros

Teaching materials are always available so you do not have to prepare them. You will need to develop lesson plans.

    Cons

Lots of hours will be spent on marking and preparation for class. These are not paid.

I worked at Marilake Education Centre full-time

    Pros

Pay is on time and consistent. Kids are generally well-behaved. Office staff are nice and genuinely want to help.

    Cons

Queenie Chow, the woman who owns this company, is as demanding and demeaning as bosses go. Her office staff are expected to call her every time anyone enters the office. She makes all teachers do answer keys for the homework given to the students every week and then have the staff fax it to her so she can correct them. She will then call the office back and ask if that teacher is still there and criticize any mistakes...

I have been working at Marilake Education Centre part-time

    Pros

    The students are wonderful!

    Cons

Much of what everyone said below is very true. The principal is condescending, mean, and rude. She will blame you for things. I've worked in so many places and have never experienced so much mistreatment by a boss or manager. The way the principal replies to you is VERY unprofessional. I have also received emails from the staff typed in all capital letters, and very unprofessional. If you're looking for teaching experience,...

    Pros

Good opportunity to gain entry-level experience. They're in need of teachers for various subjects. So chances are that you get hired the same day you filled interview forms. Whatever, it is a good job if you like kids.

    Cons

Lots of preparation work behind scene, which you don't get compensated for. Use the office printer to print huge bundles of handouts. Don't print them at home.

    Advice to Management

It's a Saturday school with a long history. It would be great if they manage the business more efficiently.

I have been working at Marilake Education Centre

    Pros

The last review post has precisely descibed most of the pros of Marilake Education Centre. So I would share some of mine. I have been teaching at Marilake for two year, and the overall learing and teaching experience has been excellent! I believe that these two years of vaulable educational experence would benefit my future teaching a lot. Furthermore, the feedbacks from students and parents of my class on the school...

    Cons

It is not just for Marilake, I believe it is for any one-day-a-week school as well. Class time is limited, so I encourage my students to continue to ask questions after class and also during my lunch hour(s). However, the staff on the front desk would be happy to help you or find help for your questions. Also, the Marilake office is open Tuesday to Friday 11:00 to 6:30pm during the week. You can always call or find...

I have been working at Marilake Education Centre part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    1) Wonderful opportunity for undergraduates as their first serious part-time job, those interested in teaching and/or becoming official OCT, or for professionals wanting additional pocket money. 2) Students are often better behaved and more attentive than those in public schools. In fact, they are one of the reasons why I go back and teach at Marilake year after year. 6 and counting! 3) Accommodating and relatively...

    Cons

My only negative remark is that advancement is pretty hard in the company if at all, but a reference from the Principal can without a doubt lead to and open one to getting accepted into Teachers' college and/or full-time OCT teaching career for those who are serious about becoming teachers. All in all, my experience working at Marilake is greatly enhanced and extremely deep-rooted in my conscientiousness, because of my...

    Advice to Management

Obviously, there is always room for improvement with management, especially if teachers feel as if they are being micro-managed too much. Thus, the Principal may even need a public relations officer and I am entirely willing to give her all the positive reputation she deserves, as she has tirelessly spent years of devotion to providing quality education through her school. It is her school, so of course she is very meticulous...

I have been working at Marilake Education Centre

    Pros

If you love to teach, this is really a great way to get into that field. The school provides material so you don't have to create your own from scratch (although the principal will try to trick you into revising everything but you are not getting paid for any of that so don't bother!).

    Cons

Principal micromanages everything that doesn't need to be micromanaged. Every week you have to call your absent students during the week, not even wait until the next class to ask them why they were absent. Then you have to report to the school...every week! The school is unorganized, I was expecting to teach a certain class of a certain size, but was then given another class with 4 times more students than I was expecting....

    Advice to Management

Stop taking advantage of your staff by underpaying and overworking. And when a staff wants to compensated more, treat their request seriously rather than telling them "you just want to be paid more and work less". Respect them and trust that they can do a good job. You don't need to ask them to report every little thing.

I worked at Marilake Education Centre

    Pros

Office staff are nice and accommodating, although if you don't speak Cantonese, there might be communication issues

    Cons

The principal is one of the most demeaning, condescending people I have ever met. She is always "right" (according to her) and expects way more than what she pays you. She will belittle you if you get anything wrong on the answer key (required to do even if you've taught the same class 5 years in a row and there are answer keys available in the office already). You will also have to spend an average 15-30 mins to go to...

Fortunately, they accept everyone that applies.

    Cons

Terrible boss. Terrible hours. Expects more than they pay.

    Advice to Management

The boss should stop yelling at people for her own mistakes.
