I worked at Marin General Hospital part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good hospital staff, state of the art cath lab and procedures. Really nice neighborhood to work in and shopping in the surrounding area. People seem to care about their jobs ans take pride in what they do.

    Cons

Lack of leadership. The hospital is all about making a profit at your expense. They find reasons to fire people who are vested and have a retirement coming to them.

    Advice to Management

Lead by example so that your employees are following you, a good example. Show kindness and get to know your employees as people, not just employees.

I worked at Marin General Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Healthcare coverage
    PTO, retirement, HSA options
Competitive wages for entry level jobs
    Union

    Cons

    Cold, corporate atmosphere
    Administration is money driven
Management is petty and creates toxic environment by pitting employees against each other
Supervisors often inexperienced and nepotism is blatant. Incompetent staff are kept on for decades.
Nurses have bad attitudes and little compassion

    Advice to Management

Show appreciation and value your strong staff members. Mentor them to succeed and listen to suggestions instead of keeping them down as if they are a threat. Encourage positivity and team building to raise morale.

I worked at Marin General Hospital full-time

    Pros

Great benefits, low copay PPO insurance, good vision and dental insurance, pension, 403b. Great PPO, I think above average when comparing to other industries and average for hospitals.

    Cons

Lots of employees suffering with low morale, and quitting. This is true for the entire organization. Staff tell each other of job opportunities elsewhere, that should tell you something, everyone is on the same page of leaving. As for the department, Manager uses hard power (sticks), to motivate employees. True there are some carrots, but approach is controlling, cold, abrupt, autocratic approach. The open door policy is in name only, as any kindly, well-worded suggestions get rebuffed before you even finish speaking. Only work here if you enjoy feeling like a wayward child that needs to be controlled - that treatment is true even if you are an intelligent adult with a history of delivering results.

    Advice to Management

I would give some advice to management, but they really don't care!

I appears at first that you are getting a lot of PTO time, approx. 8 hours per pay period. However, from that, comes your holiday pay. You will see 2-3 hours of ESL time but, that can only be taken after 4 consecutive days off and from what I understand, is not paid out to you when you leave or retire. So, not sure the math is that great. Contracted emplyees get vacation time and one day of sick leave per month so, figure it out. I would reconsider this arrangement.

Decrease the amount of expensive clinician time spent on low level tasks.
