I worked at Marine Biological Laboratory full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Broad exposure to ecosystems, neuroscience, cell biology, aquaculture, and other research. Excellent opportunities to interface with high level researchers across the sciences. Strong community of young professionals despite somewhat "rural" setting. Beautiful place to live if you love the outdoors.

    Cons

Great researchers are always great leaders of people, one must actively engage their superiors and take ownership over their career development. Community can seem transient as many folks spend only 1-2 years here. Compensation is fairly low. Summertime housing can be tricky to find.

    Advice to Management

Invest more in leadership and communications training for anyone/everyone who is responsible for the career development and day to day activities of others. Low moral among support staff is a problem that many researchers struggle with, management needs to do a better job of watching out for this.

I have been working at Marine Biological Laboratory full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Location, Good Work Environment, Great People. There are many people here that are great to work with and when collaborations develop it helps all involved.

    Cons

Expensive area to live. Soft money institutions sometimes can be difficult for both lower and upper level scientists to succeed.
