I worked at Marine Spill Response Corporation (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great work / life balance. I could leave when I wanted (only because there was nothing for me to do).

    Cons

Everything about the corporate office. Management is depleted of ideas and leadership. Supervisors and lower management only concerned about moving up and not rocking the boat. T&IS management only worried about pleasing the director and making sure their subordinates know who the boss is. Lots of micromanagement and playing favorites along with most of the office personal kissing butt. Cliques throughout the corporate location and no respect from human resources department. Human resources could care less about any of the employees' concerns. Lastly, if you are a minority, don't bother filling out an application for the corporate location. There is definitely an undertone of racism in that location.

    Advice to Management

Stop cramming the Operating Principles down the employees' throats. Upper management doesn't follow and doesn't want to hear any new ideas. MSRC is not about its People or Process.

I have been working at Marine Spill Response Corporation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Not underway much, more normalcy than a conventional boat job. Good, affordable benefits, some paid USCG training

    Cons

Wages not quite at industry standards, most vessels on-call, don't get underway much.
Management micro-manages a bit too much. Completely over-the-top with paperwork.

I worked at Marine Spill Response Corporation full-time

    Pros

When there is no response activity, pretty laid back work environment. 99% of the time things are done right. Technology is updated regularly. Benefits are ok. Safety a focus

    Cons

2 hour recall requirement, penalized for not responding to recall test. Old fashioned work environment, a lot of people have been in the same positions for 15 years or more.

    Advice to Management

No room for advancement, only a few positions to go to. Safety meetings are long and unproductive. Regions are very divided on the way things are done.

    Pros

Benefits, thats about all. There is really nothing else positive to say.

    Cons

Upper management controls all, supervisors have no say.
HR works for VP and NOTHING is confidential!
0 tolerance for employee issues, everything is a BIG deal
    The upper management loves DRAMA
It's a dictatorship ! Upper management has been in place for 20 plus years, it can not help but be this way.
Senior management condones regional management style.
The upper management team is very arrogant! They are not willing to listen to anyone within the ranks.
South Region is a joke. Try the PACNW. good people there.

    Advice to Management

Start with the "Man in the Mirror" get over yourself and bring the hammer down. This is the only way to save this company. Or, replace the President so the next guy can do it.

    Pros

Company offers great job security and the benefits and pay are good. The job never gets boring because you are doing something different every day.

    Cons

Little to no opportunities for upward career advancement. Management plays favorites, occasionally pitting employees against each other and seldom embraces ideas from their subordinates.

I have been working at Marine Spill Response Corporation full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good 401k program, pays for license renewal fees, good job stability.

    Cons

On call at all times. Hard to get a vacation, often management will cancel vacations. Annual performance reviews are biased and not comprehensive. Very little to no promotion opportunity. Management does not listen to employees concerns and comments. HR assistance in times of need are unsatisfactory. Supervisors treat employees as well as other departments as incompetent.

    Advice to Management

Follow your operating principles, or in time the good employees will go elsewhere.

    Pros

Benefits - "some" co-workers are OK to work with.

    Cons

The Gulf Region was poorly managed. Once you got on the VP's bad side, you could consider yourself out the door.

    Advice to Management

    Change your management

I have been working at Marine Spill Response Corporation full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Benefits, generous 401K, occasionally very exciting work that makes a difference

    Cons

Unless you are management you are not taken seriously and are made to feel that you are not a valued team member. When you attempt to discuss your concerns with supervisors or HR you are blown off. Very poor life/work balance. You are made to feel guilty and shamed for not attending company events on your own time. No flexibility, very rigid policies, not much room to advance.

    Advice to Management

Start treating your non-exempt employees with more respect. Sometimes supervisors are the issue, not their subordinates.

I have been working at Marine Spill Response Corporation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    * generous 401K, competitive benefits, decent vacation

    Cons

    * employees required to be on call 24/7/365 - no compensation for on call status
    * employees must be available to respond within 2 hours notice, and frequently are away from home for 3 - 4 weeks at a time.
    * Exempt employees do not receive overtime pay, and work 12 - 18 hour days, 7 days per week
    * Very little promotion potential - very basic raises
    * Salaries are far below industry averages
    * Management receives very generous bonuses, while rank and file is ineligible
    * Very high turnover rate, few new employees stay for more than a few years
    * Extreme working conditions while on spills - long, cold/hot days
    * Has become very lean, not enough employees to handle volume of steady state work
    * Poor work-life balance - management is never satisfied, always demands more from employees regardless of how it impacts family life
