I worked at Mariner Investment Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Effective communication in the department. Felt appreciated for my work. Great management style, an answer is a walk or phone call away. CFO, controller, and managers very knowledgeable. A lot to offer in terms of learning.

    Cons

I felt any computer/infrastructure updates applied to computers were not fully tested before they went live.

I have been working at Mariner Investment Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Nice culture among the support staff in Harrison and some very good operations people. Some smart portfolio managers. Decent reputation externally.

    Cons

No management direction after semi-retirement of the founder. Holding onto old business models in the industry that aren't performing. Some key functional staff are really terrible.

    Advice to Management

Clean house. Modernize. Focus on implementation/execution and on quality of talent.

    Pros

The FoF group is very small so there is a lot of work & responsibility given to everyone. As a result, you learn a great deal & have the opportunity to give a lot of input. The hours are decent compared to other finance jobs. Usually from 8am-5pm, with little overtime & hardly ever have to work weekends.

Employees from other departments like investor relations are very friendly, willing to help & give out information when needed.

The pay is standard for the industry and the employee benefits are very good (ex. company pays all health insurance payments).

The company is located in Westchester but many employees including most partners live in the NYC area, so transportation from the closest train station is available at no cost during commute hours.

    Cons

The partners and other management keep to themselves. Not very appreciative of their employees.

Employees can be very clicky & office gossip is prevalent - it can seem like grammar school at times. Human Resources and office management is a joke & if you go to them for advice they never know what to say or do.

Understandably it's a high pressure job, however management and lower level employees are very quick-tempered and snap at each other pretty regularly. Some employees are too open about religious, political and sexual beliefs which is sketchy and unprofessional.

Overall the work environment is unpleasant and at times unprofessional. While the partners and management are very good at what they do, many lower level employees are poor quality of people and reflect that in how they act & interact with each other.

    Advice to Management

Try to set a precedent of how people should act in the work place. Show more appreciation to your employees.

    Pros

Great atmosphere for summer interns. There is a tremendous amount of knowledge learned from observing traders live.

    Cons

A lot of tedious work in the beginning, and it is very fast paced atmosphere. If you get lost in the beginning without asking question it can become a very bad problem.
