I worked at Markel full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good medical benefits, 401k. Fresh fruit provided along with lits of coffee. Good location, close to eateries and shopping.

    Cons

Management plays favorites. HR sides with management if complaints are made. Lots of backstabbing, two-faced managers. Long term employees used for their hard work and knowledge but not rewarded. Promotions are few unless you are management. Bonus plan is unfair and not consistent across the units. Moral is very low. Company only looking to make money. Computer systems are very old. If you like to be micromanaged then this is the place for you.

    Advice to Management

Higher salaries, higher increases that at least match cost of living. Revamp bonus plan. Take employee complaints more seriously. Have 3rd party handle complaints and not HR who always favora management.

I worked at Markel full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits, Ability to change divisions after 6 months in a position if there is an available opening (but you are required to interview). I do believe there are lots of great divisions in Markel, and the company is VERY financially stable, but the two departments I worked in were not positive experiences.

    Cons

Limited room for advancement depending on program/division, inefficient underwriting workflows, bureaucratic, compensation/salaries are lower than industry average (justified by a bonus that is not guaranteed and that fluctuates annually) with very small annual increases

    Advice to Management

Upper level management should be more involved with day to day operations. Listen to your employees when they voice concerns (especially after multiple meetings). From my general understanding and conversations - employees prefer a higher annual salary to an uncertain bonus! Spend less time "preaching" about the Markel Style and actually embody it.

I have been working at Markel full-time

    Pros

    Great PTO and relaxed workday.

    Cons

No room to advance even if you try. Company offers flexible schedule which includes reduced full time & part time, but only certain people get it so benefits like these don't apply to all employees. Same for working remote.

    Advice to Management

    Help employees grow.

I have been working at Markel full-time

    Pros

401k, Annual Bonus, Flex start time, Stock Purchase Programs, Work from home and remote employee opportunities, Paid parking, free coffee. Tuition assistance , short and long term disability. Medical, dental, vision plans. medical and transportation savings plans.

    Cons

Deadline driven teams work 50 to 80 hour weeks. No Comp time, overtime pay or appreciation.
Engineers who leave are replaced by off shore contractors. Contractor hours capped at 40.
Plan time for downtown traffic and offsite parking.
Deadlines maintain high level of stress
Training and documentation not part of project timeline
    Difficulty scheduling PTO around deadlines
Mid Level Management stated 40 hour work weeks are gone forever and anyone who doesn't like working under stress should reconsider their employment at Markel.

    Advice to Management

Top shelf benefits package shows senior management values long term employees. Conduct surveys of employees to find pockets where the Markel style needs a reboot.

I worked at Markel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great corporate culture and work-life balance. Plenty of great co-workers and managers looking our for your well-being. Upper management doing a great job of building value in the company itself.

    Cons

As a publicly-traded company, shareholders are priority number one, not the employees. Treated as dispensable and under compensated compared to the competition. Alarming amount of nepotism as the best people are frequently overlooked for positions. Losing large numbers of underwriters and not filling those positions, rather pushing more responsibilities on support staff.
