    Pros

Great corporate culture and work-life balance. Plenty of great co-workers and managers looking our for your well-being. Upper management doing a great job of building value in the company itself.

    Cons

As a publicly-traded company, shareholders are priority number one, not the employees. Treated as dispensable and under compensated compared to the competition. Alarming amount of nepotism as the best people are frequently overlooked for positions. Losing large numbers of underwriters and not filling those positions, rather pushing more responsibilities on support staff.

I worked at Markel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Average benefits. Free Coffee. Employee Team Building Events; Nice Clean modern offices

    Cons

Emphasis on millenials. Train and promote cookie cutter underwriters fresh out of college; nepotism and favoritism; best qualified or hardest worker doesn't get the promotion. Doesn't use existing talent base. Loses too many hard working dedicated associates due to the favoritism. Former interns get opportunities and pay raises when they are lacking basic insurance knowledge.

    Advice to Management

Take advantage of your current talent. Stop favoring employees based on who they are related to, or who they socialize with. Have support staff educated.

I worked at Markel full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Markel had a great salary structure and a really great bonus structure, even if you weren't in the traditional "profit creating" part of the business.

    Cons

There are few opportunities for advancement within a particular department, constant restructuring, and very few opportunities to move around within the company.

    Advice to Management

Management could do more to explore and exploit the talent within the company.

    Pros

Nice co-workers & clean office space.

    Cons

Lack of flexibility and not willing to evolve with the times as far as allowing people to work differently than a typical corporate 9-5 structure. Lack of privacy with no cubicles or offices is extremely distracting. There is also very little career advancement opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Actually listen to your employees and stop segregating individuals that aren't in the "in" crowd. Let people have an opinion and not punish them because it isn't something you agree with.

    Pros

You will be busy, so if you like to be busy, that's great. It was nice to have a flexible schedule when needed.

    Cons

No chance of advancement. If you expressed any interest in another part of the company, they did nothing to get you a chance to see if it was an area you could move to.

    Advice to Management

Listen to what your employees have to say.
