I have been working at Markham Stouffville Hospital full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The hospital has good coworkers and lots of Opportunities for growth. Even though it is a smaller place the pay is comparable to other hospitals. Overall it is a good place to work.

    Cons

Within this hospital there are politics but no worse than anywhere else. Recent expansion was good but there are cuts sometimes.

I worked at Markham Stouffville Hospital as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

A lot of independence to do your job, no one is hovering or hounding you. There is a lot of autonomy.

    Cons

The expectations are not as clear for newer employees. No sufficient introduction of coworkers or organization. No training for new volunteers.

    Advice to Management

    Define roles better

    Pros

Nice new hospital in a community that continues to grow. A good majority of the management team care about their patients and staff. The building is lovely and new but signs of deterioration is starting with dirty units, marks on the walls and dirty floors.

    Cons

The management team care until it's 1630 and they are off to their respective homes. We're often assigned more patients then normal because we don't have a robust resource pool to pull from. If we get agency in then we must pitch in because they can't use our system. I work at another hospital where the situation is much better because they have a Staffing Office. Sometimes equipment cannot be found or is broken and nobody does anything about it.

    Advice to Management

Help fix the nursing shortage... this isn't North Bay people it's Markham. Come in on an evening shift or weekend and see what the hospital is really like, I despise the 9-5 management types.

I worked at Markham Stouffville Hospital full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The long term staff are wonderful and care about the hospital and community. Core values and treatment of patients is still in tact for the time being. Don't let this senior management team ruin the reputation of this once fine hospital.

    Cons

New management team. Don't have a clue and don't care about MSH's amazing history. They make decisions that make you scratch your heading wondering how they operate. Mean spirited, patronizing, in it for themselves and no concept on how things really work.

    Advice to Management

Stop bringing your friends to work with you. The best team leaders are leaving MSH for other hospitals all because of you. Karma will prevail.

    Pros

If you are a patient you'll receive great care from all staff. It is a caring place if you are a patient or visitor.

    Cons

Workload is crazy. They don't give us any food options for lunch (Subway) like other hospitals do. The new management team even took Tim Hortons away why I don't know it was always busy????
Old CEO was friendly and smiled and told jokes - new management team doesn't care about the staff only money.

    Advice to Management

Support the staff better. Don't hide in your nice offices come out and see how much work we have to do.

    Pros

MSH is an incredible community hospital. Everyone there has best intentions to make it the best place for patients to be treated. The frontline workers (physicians, nurses, allied health etc.) are amazing and truly want the best care for their patients. The clinicians are compassionate and dedicated people.

    Cons

Workload is unmanageable if you want to perform at your highest level. Leads to job dissatisfaction and stress. Many admin staff are unhappy, do not communicate with each other on a friendly basis only when needed. Seem stressed and complaining of too much to do.
Even if you love the type of work you are doing, you cannot get everything done in a day, a week, a month and that leads to major stress and anxiety. There are too many people walking around in a panic because of unrealistic job expectations. Very negative atmosphere a lot of the time.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your staff. Listen to them if they say they are overworked, listen to their ideas of how things can be better, HELP them find solutions. It starts at the top. If Directors can manage their workload and are satisfied with their job, then managers will follow suit and admin staff will enjoy what they are doing and maybe even smile instead of walking around with their eyes to the ground.
People rarely stop and say hi and ask you how you are, how was your weekend. Need for team building, not just within teams but across the teams in the hospital. Starting with Sr. Mgmt, directors and managers including support staff. Team building amongst physicians, nurses and management.
Solutions to job dissatisfaction are not cookie cutter and are not HIGH LEVEL. It is the personal touch that VPs, Directors, Managers, coworkers can use to make a better place to work. Start with "How can I help you make your job better?" and start with small changes that show you actually care, instead of 'we just can't do that, not in the budget ...'
The best patient centred care comes from HAPPY staff.
