I have been working at Markit full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

there's a relaxed atmosphere with very nice people. Solid amount of diversity and some senior folks are strong advocates for diversity and inclusion

    Cons

The firm doesn't push the envelope as much as it could. Betting capital and time against new technology, innovation, etc...is not terribly common.

    I worked at Markit full-time

    Pros

Hands down the best colleagues you will ever have.

    Cons

Markit’s made believe culture of the employee is insulting. It is not about the employee and/or the customer. As with most public firms, it is all about the bottom line. Don’t expect sound decisions or guidance from middle management, their mere existence is to deliver upper management’s orders which are mainly focused on chasing short-term solutions. Markit CEO’s vision was to become the best of the biggest and this is being achieved via acquisitions, very much like forcing a puzzle which pieces don’t really fit together regardless of how hard they try. The new managing directors were either hired from banks or came via the acquisition of their firms. Regardless of how they got here, they prefer to hire and promote their own so if you are not an old friend your chances of getting a directorship are slim. Career development does not exist. HR acts like the three wise monkeys: “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” and don’t bring up an issue because you will be told you are not a team player. Marketing seems to be doing the best job; the external perception of clients and potential hires is that this is a great firm when in fact it is quite dysfunctional and sad.

    Advice to Management

Listen to customers and to those who deal with your customers. Allow employees to succeed instead of using them until they fail or quit.

    Pros

Great adopter of technology, a lot of opportunities to move offices with the company, some great people work there. Progressive, excellent supporter of equality in the workplace. Very successful and grown amazing in such a short amount of time.

    Cons

Sometimes it is difficult to get heard, too much work being farmed abroad to unexperienced staff, NA Staff being pushed out the door and not replaced, beware of the "New York minute", also just merged so futures for many looking insecure.

    Advice to Management

Once in a while, listen to your staff.

    Pros

Company which is continually flexible and aiming to grow. Markit has navigated difficult and dynamic markets well and come out stronger than most all the competition. It is one of the best data-oriented vendors in the financial space thanks to this. Markit's share of the space will only continue to grow thanks to its dedication to investment and IT focus. The firm supports good opportunities for movement between teams/locations.

    Cons

There is a clear divide which senior MDs and Execs maintain between middle-level staff, and again further with Associates and Analysts. This divide has a negative impact on the hardest workers in the company and can be stifling depending on one's manager. You're seeing that the talent the company is recruiting is mediocre, in part due to challenges on upward mobility, and pay structure.

    Advice to Management

Managers should focus on hiring better/eager on-shore talent and foster an environment that makes them want to stay to building the company. The culture of cost-cutting is showing its toll, and Analysts/VPs are not rewarded well with share ownership in MRKT. Attrition of good staff and retention of weaker staff takes its toll on everyone. Separate the wheat from the chaff, or try to grow more wheat.

    Pros

Very very good medical benefits. Had there my baby and paid $500 out of 45K bill, good amount of sick days and personal days

    Cons

If you are reporting to a bad manager, you are done. The team i worked for had very short vision for women, especially if you have a family. very obvious discrimination for women, would not ever promote you even if you work harder than 10 men. I am sure my salary was much less, accordingly. The projects are not very challenging and lots of short sided and useless managers. Many times managers are unprofessional. I am gone and i could not be happier.
