I have been working at Marks Paneth full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Exposure to various industries, positive feedback and constructive criticism, open door policy with partners and managers and relaxed work environment. This of course depends on your group because there are partners in other groups who treat their staff like children.

    Cons

Long hours of course during busy season, inefficient audit planning, old-school mentality with flexibility and working remotely. Seems like HR is trying to fix this but the partners are not very willing.

    Advice to Management

Allow your employees some flexibility as long as the work is getting done.

I have been working at Marks Paneth full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

The professional staff is awesome and great to work with. Good life/work balance. Receive time and a half during busy season due to NYC law.

    Cons

The firm's PSG is one of the most poorly run and inconsistent review departments I've ever dealt with at a CPA firm and it is EXHAUSTING keeping up with their changes. Management doesn't care.

    Advice to Management

    Stop letting PSG run audits.

I have been working at Marks Paneth full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

-Marks Paneth is a growing company so you have the benefit of frequently meeting new people and clients. -There are now more office locations so if you live closer to one of the other offices it is relatively easy to transfer to the office that reduces your commuting time. -The vacation policy is generous. - They offer incentives to obtain you CPA. - You are not a number in this firm. Within the practice groups you...

    Cons

    - Growth within the firm is much slower than at larger firms. - The firm is not overly responsive to working from home ie. (Busy season Saturdays are almost always in the office, but at least they put out a breakfast spread.) - As a firm that has merged multiple times you run into a lot of style preferences that can very based on who you work for.

    Advice to Management

More and more companies in various industries are embracing working virtually. You would be surprised how much happier/ efficient employees can be when they are able to work from home more often. If working from home is not realistic there should be programs to help parents balance coming in to the office and child care. Whether that is on-site day care or some type of reimbursement for the expenses incurred due to a...

I have been working at Marks Paneth

      Pros

Smart people doing interesting work. Great training. We don't work excessive OT. My supervisor cares about me.

      Cons

We work hard during busy season, about 50 -55 hours, but that is expected

I have been working at Marks Paneth full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

I came to this firm to work, and work I did. I get to do an assortment of clients with a knowledgeable and fun team. We work hard but are a tight nit group and get along very well. Also my managers/partners are very good at growing people within the group and passing knowledge along. Money is good, vacation is great comparatively, and other benefits seem on par.

      Cons

It really depends on what managers/partners you end up working under. At the interview, make it a point to ensure that the person interviewing you is someone you can relate to and will motivate you (after all you will be spending most of your time with this person).

      Advice to Management

An overall employee benefit package needs to have something for everyone. What works for one person may not work for the other, so compromising and ingenuity is needed to make sure everyone gets a fair shake.

I have been working at Marks Paneth full-time

      Pros

I was placed at Marks Paneth LLP by a recruiter while completing my masters and working full time at a small firm and it was the best thing that has ever happened to me. The firm has reworded me for my hard work by promoting me to Senior after two busy seasons showing they are dedicated to in house career advancement. From time to time, my recruiter will call me and ask how I am doing. He has said over and over again...

I worked at Marks Paneth full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Salary (given a high offer it seems just for busy season) Paid OT Per Diem Dinners after 10 hours worked

      Cons

Hired right before busy season and let go right after. Did not work with any partners I interviewed with (very disappointing) and was assigned to a terrible lead partner who I worked on with most of my time with the firm. Worked on a specialized client who I informed the lead partner I had no prior experience with the industry and I was criticized after job was completed for taking too long on the job. Some upper managers...

      Pros

Has some great people, the work/life balance is super fair, taxis home are paid for after 8pm during tax season (within the 5 boroughs)

      Cons

Tax season sucks, but that's the standard anywhere

I have been working at Marks Paneth full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

Friendly staff, overtime for seniors and below, work/life balance

      Cons

Benefits package could be better (no 401k matching), promotions tend to only happen when somebody leave the firm, no feeling of "one firm" (it could feel like you're just sharing rent with ppl outside your dept), base pay is avg but overtime can make up for it if you put in the extra hours

      Advice to Management

Recognize your strongest players and compensate them accordingly
