Fast paced, political but if you can play the game very rewarding

      Pros

Good training - retail and management training. Staff discount card. Will work with a wide range of personalities and abilities.

      Cons

Political, wide gap between HO and stores. HO staff more easier to get promotion. Company doesnt promote enough. HR has vicious policies on sick pay.

      Terrible management

      Pros

Pay was reasonable Fellow staff members were kind Staff discount Not much else

      Cons

At my particular store (Portfield Chichester) the management would switch your shifts a few hours before you were due into work without notifying you. They would do this if the store was busy, so they'd call you and say "You are supposed to be at work" when you weren't. They would adjust your contract without asking you, spend your holiday for you in a way that best fits them without telling you and would often cut your contracted hours because they didn't have enough budget. These issues happened to the majority of staff members at the store, except for management who would stand about and do nothing. Every staff member is treated like a number with little to no respect, you weren't allowed to drink water on the shop floor (which is reasonable) but at the same time they wouldn't allow you to take a minute out of your shift to have a quick drink in the canteen before hopping onto tills. One member of management questioned how often I used hand sanitiser and cleaned my hands at a sink and no COVID training was taught. When I left the store to work elsewhere they claimed I owed them £300 out of my latest pay packet, when questioned upon it, they couldn't give a proper response as to why this money was owed.

A good place to get experience

      Pros

When I joined, someone told me it was a good place to get experience and then leave. I agree with that now. Pros: People are generally nice and easy going Staff discount and the office clearance sales were good Decent benefits such as health, cheap cinema tickets, gym discounts, tech discounts Opportunities to upskill and learn about different technology within retail It is a big company so there are many places to move about in terms of progression

      Cons

Some Cons: It is very stuffy and old-fashioned. Very hierarchical and every approach seems very top down. It feels not with the times and not modern. Does not believe in following data trends and analysis because they already have a procedure that worked in the past; even though it may no longer be relevant.

Decent salary but awful management ruins the workplace

Aug 17, 2020 - Customer Assistant in London, England, England

      Pros

20% staff discount Salary is good for retail sector

      Cons

      - Always short staffed - Frequently underpaid, had to keep track of my extra hours every month and chase up missing hours they never processed - No training provided when you start - Progression is unlikely - Commercial managers come straight out of uni with no practical experience of how things work and poor people skills - Managers aren't consistent with discipline; people who slack are often let off the hook while harder workers who are expected to do everything are given all the responsibility if there are any issues If you want a monotonous role you don't care about where you just do your job and go home then m&s is suitable, but if you care at all about how your workplace is run you'll quickly become frustrated with the lack of common sense and impractical systems implemented here.

If you are a Male, they will take advantage of you to do all the heavy lifting including roles in the warehouse, even though you are only supposed to be on the shop floor.
