I worked at Marquette University part-time

    Pros

Great collegiate community. Excellent research resources and support/guidance for adjuncts within the department.

    Cons

Extremely poor wage compensation, and no benefits. For the effort involved in the job, Wal-Mart and McDonalds pay better. This is just sad, and I let my students know how little their non-tenure-track instructors earn, in an environment where tens of millions of dollars are being spent on new buildings and property acquisitions.

    Advice to Management

The longer you treat adjuncts like an inconsequential cog in the machine that deserves poorer compensation than your janitors, the worse the impression you will make on the collegiate community at large. There is a clear sense of hypocrisy in an institution whose Latin motto is “Cura personalis” (care for the whole person.)

This department was overstaffed and overbudgeted; it could have been run much more efficiently.

I worked at Marquette University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The work hours are wonderful! The staff is friendly and professional. It was an environment where the encouraged a balance of autonomy and teamwork. It was a busy center!

    Cons

The insurance benefits are not that great.

    Advice to Management

Advice to HR-work on getting better health insurance. My deductible was high and was hard to afford medical services because of my low salary.

    Pros

As an employee, I always felt cares about by my supervisors and those around me. Self-care was a top priority, and management understood and encouraged this philosophy.

    Cons

This is a values based institution, meaning more progressive ways of thinking may not always align with the mission. This means you just have to be more creative when problem-solving or creating solutions for students!
