I have been working at Marriott International full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

It is a safe company to work for with room for growth. Leaders and team are very friendly and easy to work with.

    Cons

50 hour work weeks. You get paid very little; most of my colleagues have gotten second jobs just to get by. Even VPs and Senior Management talk about how they can't afford to do this and that. VERY hard to stay motivated knowing that 10 years from now you could work tooth and nail and still be complaining about pay.

    Advice to Management

The founder of Marriott, JW Marriott, quoted "It's more important to hire people with right qualities than specific experience" and our management works in the exact opposite way. There are a lot of opportunities available but they rarely approve you to go any direction than the path that they think is best. Very frustrating.

I worked at Marriott International full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great company - Marriott company values present at most hotels - great training opportunities - great benefits.

    Cons

Depends on Leadership at specific hotel. Has become more about the almighty dollar and not the associates. Could be more mentorship for middle management.

    Advice to Management

Remember the long term associates who made the company what it is today. Don't forget about the relationship building and rapport that long term associates have been able to forge over the years to create repeat, loyal customers.

I worked at Marriott International full-time

    Pros

Discounted travel at hotels all around the world. Exciting work with dynamic people. Ability to work in multiple facets of the business under one umbrella.

    Cons

Long hours no matter what the position and in general the hotel industry pays poorly. Hard work gets you promoted but it is often because the turnover is so high you get thrust-ed into duty.

    Advice to Management

Not much advice to really give, the business is what it is. I recommend everyone work for a big box hotel like Marriott because at least you have the discounted travel perks at many hotels.

    Pros

At Marriott, there is definitely room for advancement. Supportive management. Work life balance (sales). Training opportunities.

    Cons

Pay is not great, at all. A lot of positive things employees do go unnoticed, but negative things are always pointed out. Movement within company can take years.
