I have been working at Marriott International full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

At headquarters there is a strong company culture that is family friendly, with excellent work-life balance. Though it is a huge multinational company, there is still an underlying sense Marriott is a family-run operation: One still often sees Mr. Marriott himself in the cafeteria, and several top executives have Marriott in their names.

It's mostly a 9-to-5 shop at MIHQ. Though obviously workload varies by department, there's generally a mass exodus from the building at 5:15 and no one bats an eyelash if you have to take your kid to soccer or work from home.

With the Starwood merger there's good energy in the building, a sense that the company is growing and we're winning. There's a stable maturity to the business -- Marriott seems to know where it will be five, 10, 20 years from now.

    Cons

Generally the pay at HQ is lower than competitors in the DC area. There's an overriding sense we're making 80 cents on the dollar in exchange for reasonable hours, good work-life balance and nice hotel discounts. Most seem comfortable with the trade-off, but you'll make less than your peers in most rank-and-file positions here.

HQ itself is nice in the Hub and lobby; actual work spaces are beige cubicle farms. We're moving to a new downtown-Bethesda headquarters in 2022, but it's a long time to wait.

I have been working at Marriott International full-time

    Pros

Great growth opportunities, nice work culture, happy associate, good benefits

    Cons

Bad uniforms, lots of corporate hoops to jump through, pay could be better

    Advice to Management

update uniforms and have pay rates more closely reflect the cost of living in the area you are located

I worked at Marriott International full-time

    Pros

I have worked for both Marriott & for Ritz-Carlton. Marriott tends to ask you outright to do more and so you get more opportunities.

    Cons

Ritz-Carlton is hampered by unions. Therefore, you cannot have any official duties outside the scope of the job for which you were hired.

    Advice to Management

Get over it. Stand up to the unions. There are good people who are not content to sit and do nothing. There are also people who are union members who take advantage of doing only what is in their job description - the bare minimum.

    Pros

    Great benefits. Great company values.

    Cons

Work a lot of hours. Sometimes 60 to 70 hours. Not much of a work like balance. Don't plan on working in operations if you have kids. You will never see them.

I worked at Marriott International full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits, competitive pay, company culture, hotel discounted rates. Even better benefits once you stay with the company for 10-25 years

    Cons

Hospitality business required to work the holidays- once you have a family it's an inconvenience. Also the growth and advancement opportunities were limited.

    Pros

Leadership is outstanding and company cares for associates. What you put in is what you get back. Management is always involved and know their associates. It's not all about work, they know how to appreciate and give back.

    Cons

Work load is heavy and salary does not suffice. The amount of jobs designated to one person could easily take more than 8 hours in a day
