I worked at Marsh & McLennan Companies full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

I can’t think of one pro except it being a paycheck.

    Cons

Toxic culture rampant in one large group in Chicago, as described see another person’s post from 12/12. Two managers drove out almost two entire teams with their micromanagement, intimidation, gaslighting and harassment, while upper management and HR stood idly by. Against all logic, said managers are still employed. Who would want to work in this stressful environment? Who wants to go to work in fear every day?

    Advice to Management

Hire management that can check egos at door. Get rid of bullies.

    Pros

Co-workers, location, benefits and paid time off.

    Cons

Absolutely the worst in automation. They try and develop systems that are created by those who have no insurance experience and they continue to fail. Forced to use local drives with an emphasis created for a paperless environment using only a document management system that has no integration capabilities. You will find yourself 15 years behind the curve if you ever leave. Management is allowed to be... downright nasty as long as they dont mention any of the big protected classes. It was miserable! The review process is based on a bell curve. Not what you have done, but what your manager can argue for. One instance provided for a nationwide call with managers debating about who should receive a particular score. It wasn't based on performance. There should be no shame in telling someone they have done a great job. i am all for diversity, but in lieu of just celebrating the GLBT community, you should also celebrate those who are not, or who are not a minority.

    Advice to Management

Look into some meaningful automation. It is past the point of ridiculous....for example "Marsh Way" epic waste of money. Take stock in young talent, you are missing the mark.

"Great people! Workload issues. Clearly value external over internal candidates"

I worked at Marsh & McLennan Companies full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great benefits, awesome health plan, smart, fun co-workers, many opportunities to learn subject matter very well

    Cons

Value external candidates over internal candidates, everyone is overworked and stressed, you can only get the salary for your peer-group if you threaten to leave, poor performers are not fired, just starved out.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to 100% de-risk your business. It sends a message to clients that you aren't willing to stand by your work and puts you in a vulnerable position. Clients will start to think "Gee, if I am constantly being told I have to check my broker's work, why shouldn't an online quote service do this same thing?? I thought I was paying for expertise??" Stop burning out your best people, they are the product you... are selling. Give some actual power to give promotions, make compensation decisions, and fire people etc. to office heads, zone leaders, or even managers. Its very clear their hands are 100% tied to do right by their best people.

I worked at Marsh & McLennan Companies full-time for more than a year

    Pros

You can work when ever you want, but that is only because you are paid on commission, although they want you in the office 2 days a week and 3 days in the field.

    Cons

You will make money if you have no problem being pushy and underhanded. Don't expect any help after you trial period is up.

    Advice to Management

    Pyramid style old boys club.

I worked at Marsh & McLennan Companies full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - Many smart, knowledgeable, professionals - A fairly uniform world-wide brand - Broad spectrum of resources - A good place for young people to gain experience and responsibility - Decent wages and benefits for the middle rank-and-file - Very good compensation plans for senior and executive management - The Risk Management division (multi-nationals) traditionally had low turnover and excellent technical... people - Extended benefits to Domestic Partners

    Cons

    - Very bloated, centralized management structure in New York HQ - Executive management's response to Spitzer's legal action in 2004 took 3 tumultuous years to stabilize and when the smoke cleared, a flattish, flexible decentralized organization had morphed into a rigid, authoritarian and increasingly out-of-step and out-of-touch management team. - Constant changing of technology platforms - most very, very bad -... clunky and cumbersome. - 10s of millions of dollars spent on bespoke technology platforms - abandoned after a year or 2 - which really looks bad when you cyclically lay off hundreds of skilled workers. - Too many Managing Directors shuffling papers - Moving toward cheap, disposable workers - Middle Market business model can't compete with local and Regional - No longer stand out as knowledge leaders

    Advice to Management

    - Build a culture that values expert knowledge again. In fact, build a culture - yes, with real values; honesty, transparency - then walk the talk - Sell your Middle Market business - you're burning out your people in a doomed effort to compete with more flexible companies who focus solely on that sector. They do it better than you. - Focus on Risk Management - Send half your MDs out to pasture - Stop selling... on price - Get rid of the commission structure - it provides the wrong incentives; selling cheap price and taking too long in the marketing cycle to do so thereby driving down profit - double whammy.
