I have been working at Marsh & McLennan Companies full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

High quality people, good reputation in the industry, good place to get feet wet (just don't plan on staying if you expect to be paid more when you get promoted or take on extra work or responsibility.)

    Cons

Don't know about all op-cos but Marsh U.S. has a completely dysfunctional pay system. Long term employee are taken for granted and not given decent pay raises even if promoted or taking on new responsibilities. Lower level managers are put in awkward position of paying new people more for same job then veterans because many long term employees pay lags way behind market. While company says pay is based on company results and will ad your individual efforts. the company resulted in managements mind are always so poor the raise and bonus pools are always so small there is never enough money in the pool to reward those that do extra or whose pay has fallen behind.

    Advice to Management

Your long term employees are loyal to you, try to be loyal to them. You have acknowledged the pay problem, now do something about it before you loose more of your best talent.

    Cons

Not too much to complain about.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing as you have been over the last few years. The changes that have been made in our offices have been beneficial to everyone.

I worked at Marsh & McLennan Companies full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Flexible work arrangements;
Good opportunity for women; offset by lower pay.

    Cons

Men are pushed through to the management levels simply by asking. Women must work for decades or come in at a higher level to get there.

Infrastructure is very old and increasingly complicated to get anything done.

HR is non existent, you're required to call a generalized number and treated as a thing, not a person.

    Advice to Management

Equal pay and positions for competent employees.

Offer more in house programs, including training on new technologies and management tools to technical employees.

Invest in a good HR system. Pointless to be an outsourcing company for HR if your own internal HR is impossible to contact.

    Pros

Managers are great, but have too much on their plate.

    Cons

Low pay compared to industry for service roles.

Teams play favorites - Lucky me, but I can see that going the other way easily...

    Advice to Management

Uplift employees and offer incentives for meeting and exceeding monthly numbers and encourage an active and talkative environment.

    Pros

Exposed to a lot of different things. Pay was good.

    Cons

Management; size; favoritism; lack of training.

    Advice to Management

Don't hire "friends" and relatives of other employees who work in the same department. Treat everyone the same. Don't keep things from your employees. Make sure the workload is evenly distributed and that all employees are trained to do the job properly.
