I worked at Marsh & McLennan Companies

    Pros

Excellent ability to learn insurance industry. Global company, with international resources and a interesting history. Work never too stressful. Easy to achieve work-life balance.

    Cons

Awful internal politics. Crappy and confused senior management. Skewed employee incentives. Inability to promote and retain talent. Petty people.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees as a source of pride and strength. Do not send conflicting messages and treat them like expendable cannon fodder. Also, look to history and legacy to brand corporation and return to heritage a superior client service.

    Cons

If you are looking for good training, its not going to happen here. In order to advance, its all about who you know. Job security is very slim. Ever since the Spitzer thing, the Marsh name is not the same. The morale is terrible. No Bonus or raises in the last couple of years

I worked at Marsh & McLennan Companies

    Pros

MMC is a great place to get good quality commercial insurance brokerage experience. Experience at MMC (especially the Risk Analyst program if you're entry level) and a good personality should make you a viable candidate at any other insurance company or commercial insurance firm.

    Cons

The downsides differ depending on what department you work for. The best income potential would come in the property and casualty departments. Sometimes people in these departments get a big head and can be a pain in the ass to deal with.

    Advice to Management

The management at Marsh & McLennan can be a bit impersonal at times, as it's like any other commercial brokerage staunch corporate environment and everybody's looking after their own ass... on the other hand, there are some great managers. It all depends.

I have been working at Marsh & McLennan Companies

    Pros

Vacation time is great, medical/dental/vision benefits are pretty good, ability to work from home when necessary, and expense account for rare occassions.

    Cons

Marsh does not value young talent nor diversity. There are no diversity initiatives, little to know mentorship by senior level management. This is a company that runs on "who you know" and "familial ties". It's hard to get ahead based on the merit of your work. There is little to no incentive to continue to do a "great job". I would not suggest Marsh as a place to work; especially for entry level people.

    Advice to Management

VALUE YOUNG TALENT, VALUE DIVERSITY, CREATE INCENTIVES TO RETAIN YOUR INVESTMENTS IN EMPLOYEES

    Pros

Well run, good communication between staff and upper management, opportunities for new voices to be heard.

    Cons

Challenges of meshing the local cultural needs with internal work space.

    Advice to Management

Keep ambitious younger employees motivated and on long term career track.

I worked at Marsh & McLennan Companies

    Pros

Worked for Marsh Inc. during the summer as an intern. Pay was decent and people were nice and friendly. Big firm with growth opportunities if you want to stay in insurance brokerage.

    Cons

Work is really boring and not really something you dream about doing. Intellectually dissatisfying and not really a great place to learn because there's nothing TO learn as a risk analyst intern.

    Advice to Management

Maybe provide some more responsibilities for the analysts. Found myself sitting around for 3/4ths of the day doing nothing because it was too easy. When I asked for more, they had nothing to give me. Zzz
