I worked at Marshall Wace North America full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

They promote from within, everyone who works there is bright but with little ego, they are working on cutting edge research, growing AUM, opportunities to work in London office , beautiful new NYC office

    Cons

No whiteboards, they are 20 years old so if you are looking to join a firm that is more of a start up then this is not for you

    Advice to Management

    Continue to promote from within

I worked at Marshall Wace North America full-time

    Pros

Firm was growing in assets. Employees were friendly.

    Cons

Five star reviews not accurate, likely written by HR. They sell you hard on the firm upfront when you get an offer and claim turnover is very low with upward mobility. In reality analysts get fired arbitrarily without warning for non-performance related reasons. Very political place with fiefdoms all around. Promotions and job stability based on playing political games and not merit. The firm is cheap and underspends...

    Marshall Wace North America Response

    October 16, 2017Office Manager/HR Coordinator

We are disappointed by the comment posted. We accept that some ex-employees have a different view of the organisation. We believe this is certainly not representative of the culture within Marshall Wace and we work tirelessly to maintain a vibrant, entrepreneurial environment in which ...

I worked at Marshall Wace North America

    Pros

The culture is great-- really entrepreneurial with hardworking and bright staff. The office is beautiful too. With regard to the intern program I think they've done a wonderful job granting interns access to senior members of the firm. Honestly the whole office was quite welcoming to interns and wanted to make themselves available for questions, coffee chats, etc. A lot will be expected of you at the firm, but you will...

    Cons

The flat hierarchy of the firm may be a deterrent for some looking for a lot of upward growth within a company, although that does not really impact interns or those joining at entry level. Some may not like the relatively early start time and limited WFO flexibility.

    Advice to Management

No advice to management really. The company has been hanging a lot over recent years due to headcount expansion and office relocation. The culture that Paul Marshall and Ian Wace have created is really unique and valuable to the firm, so make sure that's kept in tact as you continue to evolve. And perhaps create some opportunity for promotion or career growth within certain Middle/Back office roles.

I worked at Marshall Wace North America full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The office is beautiful and the benefits are some of the best i've ever had. If you work hard you are rewarded well & the IT systems/support is second to none

    Cons

Senior management... they're highly strung, condescending, rude and they will treat you like you're something they stepped in.

    Advice to Management

None. They won't change as they make money & think that's all that matters.

I worked at Marshall Wace North America full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Marshall Wace is a great place to learn fresh out of university, also generally early on in one's career. The setup is very collaborative and one can learn a lot quickly.

    Cons

The firm relies rather heavily on the quant strategies for its bottom line, but there is generally little appreciation of quants by the senior management. I got the impression quant was seen as a sort of backwater. It compliments the main business but is not considered on par with the other front office teams. Maybe it's changed since but likely not. In a sense that is expected, given the firm's DNA is essentially in...

I have been working at Marshall Wace North America full-time

    Pros

Very nice office, free meals. Big firm with good resources.

    Cons

Zero concern for analysts. Lousy pay. Recruiters exaggerate bonus potential during hiring process without disclosing unfavourable deferred comp structure. Analysts get fired on a whim. Partners and PMs hoard most of the profit and throw chump change to analysts. Management could care less about developing analysts.

    Advice to Management

Stop treating analysts like commodities and cost centers

I have been working at Marshall Wace North America full-time for more than a year

    Pros

MW is a technology driven company, from the roots of quantitative trading has grown an organisation that is inherently data driven and technological at heart. Enormous leeway is given to technologists to choose the appropriate tools and systems to solve business problems rather than hidebound adherence to specific technologies Bureaucracy is kept to a minimum The people at MW, across business and technology are some...

    Cons

Very rigid on starting times, 8 am on the dot daily High pressure environment, only suited to someone with a high tolerance for ambiguity and the ability to deal with conflicting requirements Low on process - the other edge of the lack of bureaucracy.

    Advice to Management

Flexi time / work from home options should be expanded

    Pros

Relaxing and friendly culture, lovely workmates, brand new office in good location. The office is in expansion mode

    Cons

No lunch offered, MW is still new in the US so the broker access is not as strong as it has in Europe and Asia
