I have been working at Marshall and Stevens full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good people, good culture, management wants to invest in their employees, and you can learn translatable skills

    Cons

I have too many bosses, and each one wants my full attention at a moment's notice; work becomes repetitive

I worked at Marshall and Stevens full-time

    Pros

Unfortunately, there are very few pros of working here. The only positive thing that can be said is that there are a number of younger employees which fosters a generally upbeat office feel. Other than that, there is almost nothing positive about this place.

    Cons

There is a serious issue with management and the way that they handle their employees. All of the management deficiencies are communicated from directors to MD's as lower employees' fault, taking no responsibility for the poor management skills that are present. There is no opportunity for growth, the salary is a joke, and they couldn't care less about you or your personal life. The company's management have absolutely no moral integrity and they are incompetent at managing themselves, so don't expect them to be able to manage their employees. All of the competent management leaves because of the type of company that it is, and the turnover is higher than a fast food restaurant because no sane person wants to remain at this firm. There is an excess of low fee jobs, an abundance of low-quality work, and the expectation of high-quality results. There is no corporate culture, team building, or anything even close. There is no training either. Make sure to get everything in writing because management will go back and forth in their mind and invent scenarios to replace what actually happened or what was actually said. They will lie in order to maintain no accountability and will throw coworkers under the bus without hesitation. Overall, this place is a joke of a company that I can see collapsing in the near future.

    Advice to Management

If management ever took advice then this section might be relevant. Unfortunately, management enjoys the perks of passing blame and holding no accountability.

"For your sanity, please avoid the NY office!"

    Pros

Unfortunately the pros to working at M&S are severely limited. The younger staff members are ambitious and fun to be around with and eager to help their colleagues in other offices. However, that is all I can say that I enjoyed during my M&S experience. If you want to work in the appraisal industry, they do pay for industry trainings, industry memberships and conferences.

    Cons

Much like the other "staged" reviews, clearly done by management when there has been a new onslaught of authentic reviews of the firm that show how badly managed the company is. If you are considering working in Chicago or LA as an appraiser, if you are looking in NY, please DO NOT work here.

Being asked to work regularly on the weekend, staying until 8-9pm during the work week, getting berated by senior staff when not training younger employees, this job will take a toll on you emotionally and will affect your personal lives/relationships. Please stay away, the lack of training and empathy with regards to work makes the work more stressful and impossible to succeed.

    Advice to Management

NY may bring in the most client engagements, but there is a reason the office has the highest turnover, particularly with younger employees. Be long-term oriented, be practical.

There is a lot to learn.

    Pros

The sky is the limit. Management is all ears for ideas and encourages growth within the company. They care about their employees and provide a strong corporate culture. You will gain much experience working with the high profile clients they have. Great place to grow quickly and get some hands on experience.

    Cons

The company has tons of competitors in its market. The company has been around for 80+ years and has seen many trends.

    Advice to Management

    Keep recruiting the best talent.

    Pros

Strong sense of loyalty to the staff, and the company has a "family like" atmosphere. Management cared about the well-being of employees and understood the importance of work life balance.

    Cons

Change is not always easy, but I believe that the long-term vision is clear and gradually coming to fruition.

    Advice to Management

Keep the great work...! the business outlook over the next year looks very promising.

    Pros

Marshall & Stevens has a dedicated and highly talented staff. I always felt that I had the freedom to pursue opportunities and take on new challenges. The firm offers a wide variety of services so there was always something to keep the work interesting.

    Cons

As a middle market firm, there are pressures from both higher-end and lower-end competitors making it a challenge to compete for business.

    Advice to Management

I think along with offering many services is the challenge of being excellent at all of them at the same time. While there are areas where the M&S experts are the best in their field, the firm should consider focusing on those areas to differentiate from the market.

I worked at Marshall and Stevens full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of time to slack off. Some good/knowledgeable directors. Short working hours

    Cons

Mostly incompetent management. Laughable salary. Culture of cheap jobs, high volume, low quality work. Certain managers unable to management themselves, let alone staff. Completely uncompromising on needs of employees. Unethical behavior from upper management, causing an atmosphere of distrust throughout the whole company.

    Advice to Management

Management should be replaced with competent people, who are able to multitask, and lead successful collaborative teams. Hire A level employees, and keep them, rather than churn and burn. Bid reasonable rates on jobs so that quality work can be paid for.

I worked at Marshall and Stevens full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great place to work if you want to watch cat videos all day because of the lack of business. CEO will act like your buddy before he lays you off.

    Cons

Seriously, this is not a good place to work (I'm talking about the LA office--can't speak for other offices). CEO laid off a bunch of people this year, and others left due to low morale. Management makes terrible decisions, rewards bad behavior and ignores good behavior. SHADY business practices. CEO writes himself a check while others lose their jobs. Really sad.

    Advice to Management

Advice: stop posting fake reviews of yourself. Seriously, can you get any lower? The posts from March 3, 4, and 5th are obviously bogus, posted by a panicked CEO who has the mind of a child. People are smarter than that, Mark. Instead of posting fake reviews, maybe try running your company.

    Pros

Like the title says, the CEO "Mark" is awesome. He trusts you to make decisions, think critically, and execute. He won't get too involved and always keeps it chill. Good atmosphere and well compensated. Never felt like someone was watching me.

    Cons

In need of some better technology adoption.

    Advice to Management

M&S is a boutique firm. Embrace some specialties and keep to it. Then you can become the best at one thing.
