I have been working at Martin Marietta Materials full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent pay, good benefits, growing industry. Pension 401k.

    Cons

Travel time. Long hours. Good ol boy system. Slow advancement.

    Advice to Management

Manement needs help. Usually managers are not fair when it comes to promoting within their department. They also play favorites, if you are not one of the "pets" you will not advance and I have seen many good employees get forced out if they were not liked personally.

I worked at Martin Marietta Materials as an intern

    Pros

Strong Safety focus, friendly environment, supportive staff, Intern Leadership Conference (learn about others experiences at Martin Marietta and network), learned a lot about what does/does not make an effective leader

    Cons

As an intern, I really only did one job all summer and it did not require any engineering. I was showed one job and basically stayed there all summer while they tried to find a replacement.

    Pros

The hourly employees are real good people

    Cons

Most of the salary people do not know their jobs

    Advice to Management

Might want to check on your Foreman to see if they know their job

I worked at Martin Marietta Materials full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very competitive, high end pay. Very competitive benefits, including Employer matched 401k. Mostly Monday - Friday, some Saturdays. Overtime not unusual.

    Cons

Working overtime is not unusual. If you don't like extra hours, not the job for you. Poor management. Nice to talk to but can be unfair if you cross them.

    Advice to Management

    Reap what you sow.

    Pros

They pay well but, at the time you had to put in the hours for it. At one point I was working 80 to 90 hours a week but now they are working 6 81/2 hour days. I loved the people that I worked with on a normal basis.

    Cons

Management will lie right to your face. There is a horrible relationship between management and the Union. When I had left management had just went against the contract and changed our hours. They have since lost in court and had to change to hours to something different.

    Advice to Management

Work with the union stop trying to go around it and stop lying to your employees.

I worked at Martin Marietta Materials full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

People at facility I worked at were great, helpful. Good pay and plant operations manager let you know you were doing well and was appreciated. Greatly enjoyed working with my co-workers and job responsibilities.

    Cons

Martin Marietta owned facility for only 1 year before deciding they couldn't properly manage efficiently in California and they were located in North Carolina. Should have been thought out thoroughly before making the purchase. You put a lot of good people out on the street. And at the meeting when they told us the plant was sold and would be shut down, the big shots from North Carolina acted like no big deal. They still had their jobs.

    Advice to Management

Think thoroughly and analyze your actions before you actually do something.

I have been working at Martin Marietta Materials full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Benefits and flexibility for Salaried employees is the best around

    Cons

Not as friendly as an environment as they try to portray in the interviews. Upper management thinks they're better than everyone else and will throw any issues you bring to them in your face.

    Advice to Management

Don't be so full of yourselves, listen to your employees and stop playing the blame game.

I worked at Martin Marietta Materials full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

They claim safety is extremely important to them, good all around insurance package, pension plan, paid holidays and paid time off, bonus (salary only), sick time (salary only), choice of company car if you travel a lot, managers/coworkers are nice people for the most part, good HR managers, office location is in a decent area, depending on the job you will see a lot of the operations, CEO is growth minded and I expect the company to increase in size, can keep your job even if you aren't very good at what you do.

    Cons

MUCH LOWER PAY than most companies, Advancement/Professional Growth is very limited, High rate of turnover, Little respect for manager's abilities, skills or experience, NEVER felt like I was working for a world-class organization, People are routinely assigned to tasks that they have no experience with.

Company Policy and Systems training is non existent; must learn on your own.

Safety is preached, but it is not practiced nearly as heavily as they claim.

Dallas office is an "open concept" meaning you can see and hear EVERYONE - no offices, no cubicles, etc.

    NOT a family atmosphere

    Advice to Management

Study up on your employees and try to understand their strengths so you can ultimately understand what they actually do for a living.
