I worked at Maryhaven Center of Hope full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great work environment, clean shop and all the tools are provided. Awesome learning experience.

    Cons

Bad neighborhood. Some rude customers that seem to know more about your job than you do.some new employees lie about what they know.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to customers and new employees have more experienced people in the shop management needs to step up and not leave everything up to the supervisor and lead mechanic

Rewarding job, something different everyday, amazing benefits, great work environment, Staff is very friendly and willing to help or answer questions

    Cons

Very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very low pay

    Advice to Management

I would raise the salary of the people who are providing direct care. They have a very high turnover rate and this may help.

I worked at Maryhaven Center of Hope full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The individuals you work with can be a challenge, but it's amazing seeing them progress and building a rapport with them makes the job a lot easier. Flexibility in the event of a personal emergency.

    Cons

Turnover, breakdown of communication, no consistency from management. Covering staff breaks without getting one for yourself. Lack of proper resources for active treatment. Putting too many responsibilities on staff members. Quick burnout.

    Advice to Management

Be more involved with your staff and the individuals. Treat all employees the same and stop "favoring" specific employees. Encourage growth within the company and give staff a reason to stay, not make people want to leave.

I worked at Maryhaven Center of Hope full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Rewarding job if you love it. You either love it, or you don't. Personally, I enjoyed taking consumers on outings, guiding them, and helping them express themselves.

    Cons

In the group homes, the split shifts can be tough (hours). I have nothing bad to say about this company. I have worked here for 8 years. If you do your job correctly and care and take of the people who live there because it is their HOME, you will do well in this company and there is great potential for advancement.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work.

I worked at Maryhaven Center of Hope full-time

    Pros

    Good benefits, health insurance, etc.

    Cons

    Low pay
    Violent individuals
Lack of common sense from management

    Advice to Management

This is a difficult job and you're not compensated fairly for what you do and the dangerous situations you're in. Hourly wage is a dollar or two above minimum, depending on your status (per diem, FT, etc).

Management is not proactive about preventing dangerous situations for individuals. A high school diploma is required for entry level DSP, and as a result, many of the DSP's tend to be younger and immature. At the risk of sounding agist, their immaturity reflects in their handling of the individuals, and how the staff communicates with each other.

This job is good for working a year to year and a half for getting entry level, direct basic health care experience. It looks excellent on a resume but there's not much room for growth. HR would rather hire management from outside then hiring a staff member internally who has good rapport with individuals. High turnover creates stress on remaining staff. Working here temporarily is ok but make a long term plan for another job. Most people don't last more than 18 months.
