Try to listen more to your employees and speed up processes. Keeping your facilities in working order would also help with employee satisfaction.

I have been working at Maryland Department of Transportation full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great benefits such as leave and pension (if you stay long enough to get vested). It is a progressive agency to work for, always trying to stay on the front lines of industry innovation. This can pay off later when looking for a private sector job. They train their newer employees often, however, they don't always apply what they teach in practice. The job security can't be beat after you pass probation. You need to be a dangerous individual to loss your job after probation. Your job quality or quantity doesn't matter though.

    Cons

Management styles range per office, however, they tend to be more on the traditional and conservative side. Good leadership skills are taught and expressed to be desirable, however, they are seldomly found in management. Compensation for good work is nothing more than a part on the back of you're lucky, which leads to complacent employees scattered throughout the organization. There is little to no development plan for individuals, even though they try to exercise it, the execution is extremely poor. The savvy few figure out how to work the system and carve their path to the top, but often they're not the true leaders that know how to maximize a team's potential. Also, the state is the bottom of the barrel in terms of salaries of government employees in this industry.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to your employees wants and needs and help them grow to their fullest potential. Don't assume people don't care about their jobs. Everyone wants to contribute in their lifetime, and when you spend 8 hours a day somewhere, that becomes a huge part of your life. Find your employees talents, grow them, and allow the employee to feel that they are making a difference. It's not only about kissing politicians butts. It's about improving the quality of life for tax payers, that pay you and your employees salaries.

    Pros

Steady job, pays well, benefits are excellent, and there's always something to be done--days are hardly ever boring working here.

    Cons

Like all businesses, some employees give zero cares about their fellow employees and want to bring you down to their level. Management is also hit or miss when it comes to actually doing their job.

    Advice to Management

Try hiring or promoting people based on merit, not simply on tenure or how much they are friends with current management. The "good ol boy" system has got to go.

    Pros

Great pay & benefits. Other employees you work with are nice to talk to.

    Cons

Dealing with nasty people coming through toll lanes who lie on you to make you look bad on the job and get you fired. Management not giving you a chance.

    Advice to Management

Not all customers are believable because some don't want to pay the toll so give your employee the benefit of a doubt before firing them. Don't forget that your employees are customers too.

    Pros

Work life balance is great, it's easy to use leave and there's an abudance of it even for new employees. The benefits are good except for dental care is lacking significantly, be sure to brush and floss daily or 2 times per day with this plan. Diverse work environment you'll find all different types of people at this organization with varying academic, ethnic, and work backgrounds. The training is excellent and thorough particularly in technical skills.

    Cons

The salary is too low compared with other companies they try to make up for it with benefits but it's still too low. Salary should be increased to better match the very large cost of living in the DC metro area. Also management really needs to show more appreciation for employees on a daily basis in varying capacities. Many offices lack this significantly.

    Advice to Management

provide more support and appreciation for employees daily; Senior managment also needs to be exposed more to employees and middle managers to ensure they know what type of resoruces are available and have a clear understanding of the existing work and what needs to be changed. Too much this is the way we've always done it mentality.
