Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

My Experience Working in Network Operations

Mar 21, 2023 - Manager in Plano, TX

    Business Outlook

    Pros

The one Positive I took with me is the memory of the many many talented and hard working people across the company I had the privilege to have met and worked with. Any other pros there ever were are completely negated by the cons.

    Cons

I wrote draft after draft of all the cons I could say but in the end, it wouldn't change anything. I regret putting all my years of hard work at the company. I sacrificed so many of my own free time, my health and my dreams and I have nothing to show for it except heartbreak and a deep unshakable sense of betrayal. Whoever is reading this maybe you'll have better luck. Maybe they will be better. Good luck.

Not the worst company I've worked for.... but close

    Cons

Horrible pay Micromanaging Managers tell you to drop out of college Employees lie about you to get you fired (but workforce knows the truth ;) ) 2% increase annual... if you are lucky No chance for promotion Want out of your department, take a pay cut & start back at the bottom The list goes on and on

    Network Engineers STAY AWAY

Nov 17, 2022 - Tier-2 NOC Engineer in Plano, TX
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

If you lack experience and want a potential career in IT could help you land a call center position. If you can handle the (rules for thee not for me) culture, toxic work atmosphere, cult environment, grossly inadequate pay, and micromanagement of restroom breaks.

    Cons

If you are a true network engineer, STAY FAR AWAY as this is a call center, not a position for engineers. Recruiters will exaggerate the requirements of the position and promise you a lucrative salary, a clear career path, and the ability to work from home. In spite of the fact that none of that actually occurs, they will underpay you. A fun truth is that you work every holiday, which is something to anticipate, although recruiting won't tell you that. Anywhere from raising your hand to go to the bathroom to micromanaging your breaks and also watching your every move, management will be micromanaging you as they treat you like you're in kindergarten. The best thing is that management will do all of this from comfort of their home while you travel to work everyday. Talk about leading from behind they take to the next level. But don't worry, it gets worse "coming this summer" like bad movie to one wants to see they will be purposefully taking away the Break rooms to keep you at your workstation. Please disregard training because those conducting it have no real understanding of how anything operates or it some guy oversea trying to teach with crazy drawing and lots of random bunny trials. This post is effort to save other Engineers from making the same error I did, I did leave this employment and go on to greener pastures. By way they will try to screw you if you leave on your terms. Best of luck to you on your Job hunt and sorry to those that are stuck here would not wish this place on my worst enemy.

    Excellent Company - Incredible People

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Masergy is a fast-paced company with a world-class team and solution set

    Cons

Smaller size compared to some competition leads to the need for some to wear multiple hats. However, with the acquisition by Comcast Business, we are scaling quickly to meet increased demand.

Great team, questionable product and executive leadership

    Mar 23, 2022 - Senior Security Engineer
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - The security team was filled with talented, awesome people trying to do their best with limited support and tools - The company quickly embraced WFH in March 2020 due to COVID and to their credit largely kept WFH much of the last two years - Work/life balance was reasonable, though on-call schedule is worse on paper than most other orgs - Benefits were good pre-acquisition and have gotten mostly better since the acquisition (better 401k match, more vacation at the top end of tenure, ESPP, etc.) - Recent acquisition by Comcast has the potential to make things a lot better for the employees and customers, though there are no guarantees - The SOC is willing to take a chance on hiring people with no security experience, which is great for newcomers to the field. Part of the reason they're willing to take that chance is because security salaries are comically low compared to market, particularly at the T1 level (i.e. can't hire experience/talent since that costs $$$)

    Cons

    - Salaries have not kept pace with inflation or the market as a whole. They often move targets on bonuses from year-to-year as well, which will usually make it more difficult to reach 100%. If you received a merit raise in 2021 you essentially got zero cost of living adjustment (so your merit raise was your COLA), which is a great way to disincentivize top performers - Brain drain is a big issue. Whenever someone leaves the SOC their position is not backfilled, so you're left spreading workloads on an ever-shrinking team - WFH is likely being phased out due to antiquated views of what work looks like in the 21st century. Hybrid is a must, optional full remote would be better. Plenty of other companies are remote-first and find ways to innovate/collaborate while treating their employees as adults - Limited interest by the company as a whole in supporting the training and certification of their technical employees (you know, the product that you're ultimately selling) - Benefits downgrades due to recent acquisition: HSA + company match was done away with. To get comparable LTD insurance you have to pay out of pocket, whereas that level of insurance was company paid pre-acquisition - Security product is long in the tooth and subpar compared to the market. Supporting codebases that were legacy ten years ago is no way to be a leader in your space and frustrates the engineers who have to provide said support - Related to the above, there is definitely a "sales first, technology second" ethos among leadership. Customers would regularly onboard and not fully understand what they had purchased or what their responsibilities were, but they signed on the dotted line so I guess that's for ops to figure out - Employee surveys are regularly sent out to get feedback from the team, but actual changes based on said surveys are rare
