I worked at Massachusetts Department of Transportation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Paid holidays off. Paid snow days off due to state of emergencies. Lots of opportunity to advance and move around.

    Cons

Under staffed. Short staff has a horrible rippling effect on an organization as a whole. Customers suffer, employees suffer and then everyone's attitude becomes frustrated or burnt.

    Advice to Management

    Hire more people if possible.

I have been working at Massachusetts Department of Transportation full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Time off, hourly pay, and pension.

    Cons

Been here over 10 years. Managers are petty, they gossip, and are arbitrarily retaliatory. They have managers who have bonafide mental illness and should not be in charge of anything. They have many managers who are otherwise unemployable if not for the good graces of the hackerama. (Mess up, move up). You can be labeled and ostracized for being above average. I was told TWICE that I should not smile so much while walking through the office. This person was trying to help me, and explained people don't like it when you look happy. and might retaliate. Truth!

    Advice to Management

Pretend your adults, listen and treat fellow coworkers with the undeserved dignity and respect they show you.

I worked at Massachusetts Department of Transportation (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very slow and relaxed pace. Not a lot of pressure to get things done.

    Cons

Very little work and a lot of waiting around for something to do.
Antiquated software and technologies . A lot of consultants were paid to just sit around. The biggest drawback is no communication within the department.

    Advice to Management

Communicate to all employees. Take the time to let them know what is going on.

I worked at Massachusetts Department of Transportation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good people with good intentions overall. Interesting work between road, bridge, and other construction. Challenging work environment.

    Cons

A lot of politics involved. Most employees seem to have gotten their jobs via knowing connected people more than from merit and experience. Challenging to grow and advance without knowing the right people.

    Advice to Management

Work to promote and mentor those with potential and reward hard work and accomplishments. It will continue to be tough to hold on to individuals with a lot of potential if they do not see clear career paths
