I worked at Massachusetts General Hospital full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Massachusetts General Hospital is a great place to work, all other employees I had the pleasure of working with were friendly and willing to help. My boss and human resources were very fair to me and I felt comfortable talking to them with any problems.

    Cons

One of the worst things of working at Massachusetts General Hospital for me as a commuter from Northern MA was the parking. Most of the time I had to sit in traffic on my way to alewife and pay $7 to park, then taking the T took even longer and if there were any delays on the red line it made the commute so much longer.

    Advice to Management

My advice to management would just be to keep doing what you are doing. I had a very good experience with management and received constructive criticism that made me better at my job.

    Pros

the office was clean and I had my own cubicle which was nice. but It was so isolating and I had no one to talk to all day or had anyone to eat lunch with. It was hourly so that was nice since I would work more during monday-thursday and leave early on friday. work life balance was good.

    Cons

manager wasn't helpful, didn't help me, was moody, work place was lonely, work was boring and slow, didn't learn, study didn't even kick off for a whole year. Manager was moody and unforgiving, wasn't clear with what instructions he wanted and never really followed up. I wasn't paid a lot either!

I have been working at Massachusetts General Hospital full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Where I work: Bosses are flexible, up to a point, and the people are great. Insurance is really incredible.

    Cons

Tough location, the paid time off is good but not great (so it should be billed as great); high expectations coupled with almost no opportunity to increase pay.

    Advice to Management

The opportunities for bonuses and wage increases should be universal if they are going to be offered, and not be the privilege of a select few whose qualifications do not disproportionately outweigh others.

I worked at Massachusetts General Hospital full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -cutting edge research
-enough labs are well funded here to be able to work on optimal field of interest with the 1-2 yr job security given by a postdoctoral appointment
-great professional networking opportunities for academia and industry options
-great mental health resources/employee assistance programs

    Cons

for the R and D sector:
-stressful, fast paced, ruthless at times
-re:health care package: the partners basic package is a rip off and very expensive the first year even with the convoluted system of partner credits which no one seems to explain satisfactorily in the employee benefits department--be warned! it is otherwise very GOOD quality health care though.

I have been working at Massachusetts General Hospital full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, strong retirement plan, decent benefits package, good location, free parking on nights and weekends, great co workers, 24 hour coffee shop

    Cons

None that I can currently think of. Maybe that the wages are lower than other hospitals in Boston. Overall a good place to work

I worked at Massachusetts General Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

MGH was a true leader in research and a top hospital in the nation. Research projects were cutting edge and fast-paced.

    Cons

Hectic and competitive daily life with little oversight. Research often ended up being error prone. The salary was low for the amount of work.

I worked at Massachusetts General Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great environment with leading researchers, doctors and professors, 403(b) plan. Conveniently located basically in downtown Boston.

    Cons

Long hours, but it depends on your project. Awful traffic at times, better commuter on the subway. 403(b) plan did not match employee contributions. No bonuses.

    Advice to Management

Research fellows perform a lot of hard and excellent work and they should be treated better. The PIs dictate what they want
