I have been working at Massachusetts House of Representatives full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Working or interning in the Massachusetts Legislature is a rewarding experience for any young person interested in politics, government, and public service. There is a solid sense of camaraderie among the staff, which contributes to a fun and helpful work enviornment. Those who play well with others do well here. Cons

Low salaries, especially when compared to other state jobs. Salaries are set based on your position and there are no opportunities to negotiate. Staff experiences vary greatly depending on who your boss is; many aides are overworked and we are all underpaid. Advice to Management

Higher salaries for all staff would allow the Legislature to retain its talented employees.

I worked at Massachusetts House of Representatives full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

State holidays off, some tuition support at state institutions. Rarely work late. Learn about a broad range of topics through research. Excellent networking opportunity.

    Cons

Serving as the screener for constituent calls. Security checks are time consuming. Not very flexible. Not excessively queer friendly, though that depends on your office.

    Advice to Management

    Remember your employees' names.
