I have been working at Massachusetts Medical Society full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Laid back environment. Very nice office. Lots of holidays. Flexible schedule. Really good people to work with. Very stable company - over 200 years old. Good healthcare and dental insurance.

    Cons

Below-market salary. Small bonus. Too many meetings.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the folks on the frontlines. Hear their cries.

I have been working at Massachusetts Medical Society full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Pros are:
    - 12 holidays, plus 15 vacation days and also sick/personal days
    - flexibility for working moms and depending on your team you can work from home one or two days a week
    - daycare in the building for school vacations or school holidays
    - quiet office
    - big desks

    Cons

    Cons are:
    - everything is done how it always has been done and innovation is minimal
    - seems like people get hired and never leave, which only encourages the "but we've always done it this way" mentality
    - quiet office
    - average age is probably 45-50 and it is not a "fun" environment

    Advice to Management

Weed out some of the under performers who have been here forever, and hire new talent to come in and make real changes if you actually want to innovate. It's time to move away from what has always been done since the late 90s.

I worked at Massachusetts Medical Society full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, friendly coworkers & overall mission drives the organization. Work/life balance is valued, great place to work if you have a family.

    Cons

Senior management poorly communicates strategy, roles/positions are ill defined leaving overlaps AND gaps in accountability, nepotism & favoritism is rampant, slim to none chance of promotion or career growth, smart capable people cover for those who aren't competent, people stay longer than they should and the organization finds or makes up positions to allow people to stay despite lack of ability- which causes frustration

    Advice to Management

See cons. Don't keep people 'just because', if you don't hold everyone accountable, the young, smart capable people will continue to leave- with skills and capabilities you need- it's all lost opportunity, lose the 'we've always done it this way attitude', better communication, don't hire placeholder people for job openings- be sure the skills & experience are in place

I have been working at Massachusetts Medical Society full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The benefits package is amazing. The Society is very generous to its employees in both financial and non-financial rewards.

    Cons

The commute is hellacious. There are too many companies in Waltham for so few routes in and out.

    Advice to Management

    Consider more telecommuting.

I worked at Massachusetts Medical Society full-time

    Pros

If you want great benefits, this is the company to come to. If you want easy going people that work hard, but with less of the rancorous politics then this is a good place. If you want to work for an "older" company both in terms of the corporation itself and the people working there then this is for you. If you want to work for a leading brand in an industry than this place is for you.

    Cons

If you want to work for a company that pays a high salary, then this place is not for you. If you want to be challenged than this company is not for you. If you want to climb the ladder quickly this company is not for you.

    Advice to Management

Communicate the strategy better. Provide career tracks that demonstrate an individuals opportunities to grow and climb within the company. You'd be able to keep some people if you provided clearer paths to leadership and increased opportunity.

Amazing benefits, tons of flexibility, longevity. An extremely involved and caring executive leadership team.

    Cons

    Advice to Management

    Pros

Positive work environment. Supportive management. Fairly consistent, regular schedule. The Society is an easy place to work. Nice environment and positive vibe.

    Cons

The problem with the Society is that it is a place where careers come to die. If you are an aggressive, career oriented person, this is not the place for you.

    Advice to Management

Management needs a more focused vision and that vision needs to be communicated more clearly and regularly to the staff. Need to get workers excited about coming to work everyday and need to remove employees who are not performing.
