I worked at MasterCard Foundation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

For the most part, extremely competent and passionate program staff. Impressive portfolio of partners which provides ample learning opportunities for most staff. High impact organisation.

    Cons

HR focused entirely on protecting senior managers and leadership and advancing their objectives. Limited transparency on remuneration across teams, and lack of internal communication suggested there were things being withheld from employees. Some instances of abusive managers, which were either mishandled by HR, or never dealt with, which resulted in high rates of turnover among more junior staff. On the strategic planning side - no transparency on the way decisions were made. Strategy is determined by CEO's own vision and objectives. Recent wave of retrenchment and frustration being voiced by former employees illustrates this well.

    Advice to Management

Improve your internal communications - be honest with staff. Overhaul your HR function and establish whistleblower process to allow for more junior staff to raise concerns without fear of retaliation. Decentralise decision-making power so that individuals at all levels feel empowered to make decisions and have a say in the direction of the organisation.

I have been working at MasterCard Foundation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    1. Dedicated group of young men and women 2. Great office location 3. Working from home is becoming more accepted

    Cons

    1. CEO is the sole decision maker- it is her show! She is building her own legacy. 2. Lack of accountability from the board- the CEO reads every word of board book before it reaches board members. 3. Do not disagree with partners who are CEO's friends or you might just get fired! 4. HR does not understand what diversity and inclusion means in an African context! You cannot fill an office with the folks from the same tribe/community. 5. Passively racist towards folks of color and specifically black people. You will waste your time getting that promotion while your white peers are promoted left and right. 6. Starting your career- do not come here! They talk about empowering young people but those at the Foundation lack support and mentorship.

    Advice to Management

    1. Reward your employees 2. Genuinely listen to your employees inputs on partners and programs. 3. The senior leadership team need to hold CEO accountable and vice versa. 4. Decentralize decision making process 5. Diversity and inclusion on the continent when hiring.

I have been working at MasterCard Foundation full-time

    Pros

This is extremely hard to list right now, given CEO's recent decision to lay off a huge amount of staff. I would say that I have a sense that most people have sense in them, but they are mostly afraid to say anything now.

    Cons

This place has gone truly insane this year. Honestly so much legally and ethically dubious stuff is going on -- I almost envy the 40 staff who got severance. It's truly amazing these people will decide how billions of dollars get spent.

    Advice to Management

Good luck if you think treating Africans working in their own countries the way you treated your most recent staff is going to work. The bullying of CEO's favored consultants and favored partners will get you in trouble.

I worked at MasterCard Foundation full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Smart and dedicated workers at the staff level.

    Cons

Terrible place to work. Leadership lacks vision, integrity and honesty. They are still way behind on diversity on inclusion. Very clear barriers for career advancement for Black staff despite their qualifications, experience and exposure. They keep making flimsy excuses not to promote and reward the hard work of minorities while playing petty politics. No respect or trust for staff as a professional.

    Advice to Management

There's a clear vote of no confidence in the leadership. Leadership needs to be changed.

I have been working at MasterCard Foundation full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Meaningful work, talented staff, great office, good benefits.

    Cons

Approaching second restructure in two years after they botched the first one. Org culture is fear-based, passive aggressive, and driven by perfectionism. Employees aren't valued. Work life balance is non-existent. The only recognition for great work is more work. Stuck in start-up mode 13 years in, which means changing course constantly, creating total chaos. Decisions are driven by board or CEO expectations rather than strategy or results.

    Advice to Management

Trust in and reward your staff for their hard work and expertise. The organizational values and behaviours are supposed to include listening, kindness and respect. Demonstrate them. Put more faith in results and strategy, less in CEO approval.
