I worked at Match Education full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The experience is diverse and intricate, allowing you to grow through your involvement with a wide range of duties from classroom management to planning and running extracurriculars.

    Cons

It is a lot to take in over a very short period of time and you really need to hit the ground running. Getting bogged down in the first month or so is very easy and with all there is to learn adjusting can be difficult.

    Advice to Management

Allow more time for training during the summer. Perhaps forward school specific training videos to candidates so they can be better prepped for what's to come.

I worked at Match Education full-time

    Pros

Working alongside a lead teacher is an advantage in the sense that you are able to witness the lead teacher's day-to-day responsibilities. Also, you are able to get experienced feedback on the lessons you teach.

    Cons

The advantages of the experience are based on who you work with as your lead teacher. Sometimes, the lead teacher/associate teacher pairings are ineffective.

I worked at Match Education full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I enjoyed being able to work in a school setting in a variety of roles while deciding which path I wanted to take. I also liked that the organization emphasized the importance of building positive relationships with students

    Cons

I am not a huge fan of the no-excuses culture. I believe in setting high expectations for students but prefer a more therapeutic approaches to behavioral management.

I worked at Match Education full-time

    Pros

working with awesome kids who need individualized attention and care. Can learn a lot about education policy and curriculum development as a result of the environment.

    Cons

Organization is run like a for-profit business. Administration not attentive to needs of the school or their employees. School culture is very strict and reform-school like. Employees are not treated well and tutor corps is not compensated well and expected to work many extra hours as 'assistants' to the main classroom teachers but do not receive additional payment.

    Cons

    Compensation. Non-profit environment resources stretched.

I worked at Match Education full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great leadership; communication between staff and leadership is there.
Feedback heavy; if this is your first job, the level of professionalism expect is very high which will be used in almost all jobs.
Students are great; some of the brightest and best-behaved children you will meet. You really get the opportunity to form strong bonds with your students!

    Cons

All honesty, workload is a LOT. You are expected to work many hours, but it comes with the description. People who come to this type of work environment expecting it to be a gapyear for med school or something else have done it, but put the work in (the students and the school need it).

If you aren't a believer in no-excuses, this may not be the place for you. No-excuses charter schools believe that in order to ensure student success, the behavior and academic expectations should be set pretty high. There will definitely be push-back from students, but seeing the difference it makes when they are through this type of program really helps them as they age. Despite that, there are anomalies where some children just cannot follow the system and would be better served in another model

    Advice to Management

Best experience of my life. Thank you for everything!
