I have been working at Materia full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Innovative technology platforms with many potential & exciting applications
    - Strong new direction from management with product & customer focus
    - Growth phase company with good opportunities for advancement for those with the right attitude and work ethic
    - Nice, respectful people that care about each other on a personal level
    - Benefit package is excellent & adds significant value to overall compensation package
    - Strong value proposition, excited & persistent private investors and good business outlook

    Cons

There are some very critical reviews on here. While there is some truth to a lot of what is written, it's really overboard in most cases. The majority of the issues have been addressed, in my opinion, when management essentially opened the floor for comments/suggestions about a year ago. There are and will be some growing pains; overall the good outweighs the bad here.

    My current take:
    - There has been some restructuring which created uncertainty and made some people a little nervous, but ultimately was for the stability and growth of the business.

    - Communication can sometimes be convoluted and requires patience and follow through on an individual level, but getting better day-by-day with better organizational structure and manager experience.

    Advice to Management

    - Continue and refine the push to commercialize products and add manufacturing capabilities.

    - Continue clear and open communication through company meetings and updates

    - Remember that one of the greatest strengths of Materia is the ability to be responsive, creative, and innovative. This should remain a core principle even as the company transitions from development to commercial focus.

I have been working at Materia full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits are great. Scientist and engineers are great.

    Cons

Job instability. CEO had plenty of time to demonstrate and bring the company up to become a profitable business and has not done so. He has organized people's role within the company but he is not good at finding business for the company. The CEO's inefficiency have resulted in 2 lay offs in little over 1 year and low morale since he took over. If you are a scientist or engineer it would be very wise to find another place to work. You might get hired and lay off 6 months to a year after. Someone very recently gave a positive review of the company previous to my review. I do not understand what is that coworker thinking or what is he/she looking at to base his/her review. That person has to be a top manager. As most top managers within the company he always have an excuse and blame situations on circumstances. Well, the truth is that the only circumstances, are those on top not doing their job. The higher the management, the more inefficient they are. No new investors and old investors are pulling out. The only ones believing they are doing a good job are those from the top management itself. If you are not a pHd you will be underpaid as scientist. Communications is still a huge problem within the company. Definetely, no promotions and if you are promoted, you will not get a raise but get more work. That is unless, you are top management. Do not believe all what the top management says. They have a tendency to over inflate their positions and what they do. The real results are, lay off for scientist and engineers, no new or very little new business, old costumers going to others suppliers and waste of money in high salaries for very little positive results. Next lay off will probably happen (and very likely) before the year is over.

    Advice to Management

Fired all those who do not bring positive results from the business team. The business department works hard but they are inexperienced, and are very well paid to do such a poor job. None of the business department have been laid off or fired and yet they are the most ineffective department in this company. Top management lives in some fantasy world, and in their minds they are quite successful, they are not. Hire proven and capable sell's people who are not just silver tongue and are able to do their jobs as expected. Fire those who do not fill a quote (most of them). Those guys have cost this company a lot of others peoples jobs. This company likes to lay off scientists and engineers before anyone else. Poor decisions from top management have wasted a lot of money and therefore jobs. I hope the board come to its senses and dismiss the top 8-12 people since they are not qualified to do what they are getting pay to do. The results speak for themselves. If you look at the facts, they are irrefutable. It is a shame what the current top management have done to this company.

I worked at Materia full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

This place is great if you love being overtly exposed to lots of toxic and harmful chemicals. There's lots of free food and coffee to help supplement the fact they can't pay you well.

    Cons

Lack of proper safety engineering. Bring it up to management and they will claim 'we are as start up, we are working on it'. Yet months if not years will go by with the same old dangerous process. I love how their HR tried pitching the whole company on going HMO instead of PPO. He snuck it in there as if it was a huge benefit to yourself, sneaky weasel. Place is very management heavy, they probably outnumber the actual amount of employees present.

    Pros

Paycheck every 2 weeks. Direct deposit is utilized here.

    Cons

Many levels of management. High level management does not communicate directly to lower level employees, except CEO. Communication between groups is very poor, Many projects are not focused on until deadlines approach, creating unnecessary time crunches. Lack of experience in many parts of the company. Many managers with little managing experience; many of them work from a desk and are not required to or do not understand the necessity of walking around and seeing what happens around them. Budget issues seem to take priority over everything.

    Advice to Management

Talk to employees that you are responsible for. Streamline company structure for the first time in ever. Offer training for managers, so they can learn what their purpose is.
