    Advice to Management

Recruit managers that actually have experience in software engineering.

I have been working at MathWorks as an intern

    Pros

Company culture really makes you feel like a valued part of the company and they want to invest in you.

    Cons

In terms of software engineering salaries in the greater Boston area, it might be a bit low

I worked at MathWorks as an intern

    Pros

I interned for two summers at a particular Toolbox team of Mathworks. The biggest pro is the work environment -- extremely competent and composed team of engineers, very friendly and comfortable work environment. Because this is a single product with about 2 released per year, the whole working process is well scheduled and managed. If you know your area of expertise at a graduate school level, are willing to learn with ego issues, this is the best place to intern. I got to learn a lot from experience engineers and emerged a much better computer scientist as a result.

    Cons

It's not as big as a Google or a Facebook, and also not a new and trendy hacker-type place. Also, even though their software is used by research labs all over, they do not have any R&D wing to do in-house research, nor are they AFAIK interested in publishing research like other industry labs. Further, MATLAB is gradually being eclipsed by computer scientists in machine learning and deep learning by Python packages, so it may have some rough times ahead. Their intern salary is also lower than what an Amazon/Google/Microsoft/top-tier-place intern gets,, which is understandable....

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great environment and smooth working process. It would be great also to think of competing in R&D, publishing research, to take on the competition who do stuff like this in addition to having a product based company.

I worked at MathWorks as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Free membership to science museum
    - Discounted gym membership
    - Free cookies on Friday

    Cons

    - Too much 'micro-managing' (you literally have like 5 different people to respond to)
    - Too disorganized (for the same reasons above)
    - Not enough effort to facilitate interaction between the interns
    - Not as much pay and perks as other software companies
    - Noticeable difference between the treatment of interns and the treatment of full time employees
    - You share an office with a full-time EDG employee who's most of the time on the phone solving "technical problems using MATLAB® and Simulink®."

    Advice to Management

I think the hiring committee could have definitely made it clearer the difference between the EDG program and a regular software engineering internship program. By not making this clear, a lot of interns (including myself) felt confused by what the program entailed as well as possible future employment at the company. The truth is, the interns do NOT want to work in 'technical support,' and by not making this clear in the first place, it definitely felt like the company is desperate and somewhat deceitful to recruit more people for this position. Why waste talent (some people had Masters and PhDs) on technical support? This is what online documentation is for.
