I have been working at MathWorks full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

All of the above. People really care about doing the right thing and will work hard to get there. Big focus on users and understanding what’s driving us forward.

    Cons

Important stuff takes too long. Sometimes for good reasons, but sometimes not. Lots of delays occur simply through confusion due to inadequate communication.

    Advice to Management

Quality and speed require teamwork and discipline. Expect more out of your people - we can handle it.

I have been working at MathWorks full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Group of very smart people to work with and people are encouraged to speak out if they see something that should be fixed The secondary benefits are great and the drive to make sure people volunteer their time is fantastic. All kinds of great training are provided in house. Process improvements are seen as important

    Cons

It takes a long time to have people value your opinion as you are still seen as new after 2 years. There is no real career growth, the base salary is low and the raises are close to inflation correction. There is no real support for obtaining certifications after training. Because people have been here for years, the development of a "MathWorks" way sometimes blocks real change/improvements Management in some areas...

    Advice to Management

New people bring new ideas to explore. Also instill leadership methods into the current management teams so they inspire improvements and provide drive to change. The current model of single threaded expertise might be a risk in the long term. The teams are not able to use proper collaboration as they are often single people that hold all knowledge of a particular area

I worked at MathWorks full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Stable company. Great location and facilities.

    Cons

Some groups are poorly managed. Significant number of employees, including some managers, appear to have grown up in a culture where speaking up your mind is perceived as a sign of disrespect, even if it is done constructively. If you do not mind being micro-managed and follow strict orders, this is the company for you. If you get stuck in badly managed team, it is nearly impossible to move to another team. The...
