I have been working at Matheny Medical and Educational Center full-time

    Pros

Matheny direct-care staff really have a heart to make a difference in the lives of those we care for. It is a unique, specialized hospital unlike any other. Once here, it grabs your heart and your are committed, you know right away if it's for you or not.

    Cons

There is a recent disconnect between administration and direct-care staff. Unfortunately, this is creating a rift that is beginning to have an impact on the staff. Moral is very poor, and the nurses and PCA feel they are not valued.

    Advice to Management

Be aware of what and how the changes you are making affect those who are the primary caregivers of the clients we serve. Please see the value in the long-hours, staying late, coming in early, and the day-to-day things that are done out of concern for the patient - NOT the $$$. Being appreciated goes a long way, but being neglected and discounted leaves an empty void where hope and a heart full of concern and love used to be.

I worked at Matheny Medical and Educational Center full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

the children, some of the staff, education

    Cons

the management focus has changed so much over the 8 years that it no longer is a place that employees love to work. It used to be a great place to learn and grow. Now they just want you as a body to do the work. Change is always difficult so I hope the best is yet to come because the children deserve it

    Pros

If you care about children and adults with complex disabilities, this place will help you find meaning in your work. You will find coworkers who care about the people they serve, and who work hard to make Matheny a good place for them.

    Cons

The current administration has serious problems communicating with employees, defining their roles, and practicing themselves what they they preach. The result is a work environment where employees feel disrespected, disengaged, and unsure about their future. Decisions that effect employees are made in what seems to be a random fashion with little input from employees and little communication about what went into those decisions.

    Advice to Management

Don't blame lack of employee engagement on the employees. Take a serious and honest look within.

I have been working at Matheny Medical and Educational Center full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Humane working environment, fair compensation, not especially stressful. The staff are there because they want to be, not to feed their egos.

    Cons

Little room for advancement or professional development. Parking is inadequate, meaning all employees are expected to carpool from locations offsite several times a week. Healthcare plan is not well subsidized. Location is inconvenient and offsite work is not supported.

    Advice to Management

Get the parking issue sorted out.

    Pros

Matheny provides quality care for the developmentally disabled. Services include personal hygienic care, nursing, therapy, recreation, job placement assistance, transportation, etc. The environment is one of giving, with the client's needs the top priority. Very easy to fall in love with the client's, with the job not feeling like work.
Job opportunities can be found in all the areas mentioned above.

    Cons

Salary increases have been stagnant for several years except for upper management. In the midst of budgetary and structural transition. Elimination of several long standing positions has been the result.

    Advice to Management

Some of the positions and people eliminated had value well beyond their salaries.
Continued cuts of valued, veteran staff could result in decreased staff morale.

    Pros

Staff are committed; it's rewarding to work at a place where you know people with the most complex disabilities are getting quality health and educational services

    Cons

The organization, to a large extent, is at the mercy of state funders. Sometimes a sense of instability flows through the organization.

I worked at Matheny Medical and Educational Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Wonderful programs for adults and children with cerebral palsy and other physical and cognitive disabilities.
PTs, OTs, and other support staff are very caring
Music therapy and arts programs are excellent
Many highly dedicated teachers for students PK -21

    Cons

Working in the school as a paraprofessional was a terrible experience. Senior managment was very condescending and unprofessional, even trying to sabotage the teaching job I took at another school when I was dismissed from Matheny, with no warning or reason given. I know of other teaching and secretarial staff who were dismissed with no reason given or opportunity to recitify the situation. Other departments might be fine, but I would not recommend working for the school.
