    I worked at Matheson Tri-Gas full-time

    Pros

High starting pay, great benefits, and access to a vast knowledge base. You get a chance to meet a lot of clients in a somewhat niche market which is definitely an advantage if you just needed a job in the welding supply industry.

    Cons

ALL Matheson locations were locally or regionally owned and generally successful community businesses, however; after Matheson decided to buy them all up with a VERY weak plan for getting all locations tech updated and on the same page (logistically speaking) a MASSIVE number of employees have quit because of DRASTIC management and procedural changes that have turned the whole company into a mess. And Matheson was recently purchased by Mitsubishi and have since been expected to trim the fat because that's what the Foreign investors want, so store stock supplies have been cut, and every store has been instructed to sell everything at retail unless they setup a credit approved application for a store account, in which the Matheson (corporate) get to collect debt on people who default, and all front desk clerks get to also play collections officer for their location, but now they have to enforce the corporate guidelines for what used to be handled at a hand shake level. Not to mention asset tracking on leases was a joke. I'm sure Matheson will go under or be sold off within the next 5-10 years if they don't get their act together.

    Advice to Management

As long as the corporate structure is setup the way it is, there is nothing you can do, my advise is get out while you still can.

    I worked at Matheson Tri-Gas full-time

    Pros

Good product offering and loyal customer base

    Cons

Definitely a good ole program; if you haven't been there for 20 years then don't expect to stay. Poor training for sales people.

    Advice to Management

Accept some new blood and allow change and new ideas. Not every successful way of business is under a single umbrella.

Hire more technical savvy people and don't spread them so thin.

I worked at Matheson Tri-Gas full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people that work there are really nice and friendly. The environment in their Portland Oregon corporate office is pretty relaxed. I enjoyed going to work everyday.

    Cons

The office "manager" needs to learn how to manage employees. Allowing a coworker to try and tell you how your religion is wrong, then doing nothing when complaining about it is not OK. There seems to be a divide between office and warehouse/drivers.

    Advice to Management

Take some management courses and learn how to discipline employees. Upper management needs to really look at some training for their staff. The only way to "move up" in the company is either waiting for someone to retire or die. Ultimately I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone looking for a job.

    Pros

Pay and benefits are comparable to other companies in the industry; fellow co-workers try to do a good job given the many issues the company has.

    Cons

This company is micro-managed beyond belief starting with the CEO on down; senior management is more concerned with cost cutting initiatives and running the company as thin as possible than they are with securing new customers; employees are not treated as team members but as a cost burden; the HR department is not engaged or employee friendly at all; there is a very high turnover of employees; this company is only growing due to acquisitions.

    Advice to Management

The extreme micro-managing has got to stop for this company to succeed; allow your facility managers to manage and make decisions; higher more people and stop trying to run so thin or risk losing more hard working, skilled and knowledgeable employees; create an atmosphere where employees feel valued and not continually scrutinized for every decision that is made; keep employees informed about the company and its future so that they feel a sense of pride and ownership.

    I worked at Matheson Tri-Gas full-time

    Pros

Good benefits, salary ok, steady job with no funky shifts. Many good people on the front line. Had ability to transfer all over the country if there was a job position open.

    Cons

Only worried about hitting the budget for the current year. Closed profitable locations just to hit the current years budget. More worried about cost savings than growth. Eating itself from within.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing and you will sell off the packaged gas division in 5-7 years from miss-management. Like it or not you are in business to make money not forward someones dream agenda. Remember if you have no customers you have no business.

I have been working at Matheson Tri-Gas full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of hours and some newer trucks. Flexible hours if needed.

    Cons

Not enough workers. Need more motivated people in certain positions to make the work flow smoother.

    Advice to Management

Do less safety talk and more safety action. Let workers focus on their jobs and develop their strengths instead of being distracted by overall company weaknesses.
