    Pros

    I was an Outside Sales Rep under tremendous leadership and part of an extraordinary team of salespeople. The support from the storefronts was great as well, but I hear that varies. If you have solid upper management, there is very much a "we are only as strong as our weakest link" mentality that everyone buys into. The salary and benefits are very good, even great. The training is outstanding. I've had almost two decades of experience in sales and each position comes with it's own training programs. Mathesons sales model is second to none.

    Cons

    It's a safety driven company, which is crucial since it can be a life or death situation, but there is a lot of turnover with drivers. Drivers impact sales and overall morale more than they think. They also pulled delivery trucks out of every store and assigned all of the deliveries to come out of their fill plants. Great in theory, but poor communication from driver and plant managers to the outside reps and their managers leads to constant blowback from customers who don't get their deliveries when promised.
    Another con, which is relevant for Matheson AND their competitors is the business model as far as contracts go. If you do not read and take advantage of the fine print, you will be contractually married to them (or their competition).

    Advice to Management

    Like most other companies, I feel they're losing their focus. Technology is outstanding and helpful in so many ways. But I (personally) feel that sales in general has moved away from a handshake and just being able to go out and sell. So many hoops and spreadsheets to jump through day to day, week to week, etc.

    Pros

    If you are paid an hourly wage you can take advantage of Overtime and "bring home the bacon" if your branch location does not account for their labor costs. I witnessed a co-worker make an extra 30K in overtime. This smooth operator worked in the store so it's safe to say the overtime hours may or may not have been spent sitting down and relaxing. If the phone rang or a customer came to counter the employee would go M.I.A.

    Cons

    Most Blue Collar/Union workers (majority of customers) dislike that the company is Japanese owned. No organized training program in place. If new to the industry you will be lost and confused the first year if you stick around. If you stick around second year you may pick up some knowledge but you will still be 30 years behind. You get to smell propane all day. Drivers are doomed if they are in an accident even if it's not their fault. If in customer service you have to deal with delinquent customers who live in mansions but can't afford to heat their house.

    Advice to Management

    Attempt to make working atmosphere somewhat fun and organized so your not surrounded by cynical/angry employees who are only there to collect a paycheck.

    health, dental, vision insurance and 401k

    There seems to be an environment where at times the higher ups feel like they can mistreat the employee, there is also a feel like employees are not treated equally.

    Great benefits. Every tool you need. Company will spend money if needed. Great people. Travel if wanted. Opportunity to advance.

    Married to your facility, Lots of work placed on you, Expected cost savings annually, Upper management expects a lot of you on a weekly basis,

    Take care of the people that make you look good and take care of you. You can only cut so much fat until you get into the meat and eventually bone.
