I have been working at Mattel full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedules and lots of vacation time.

    Cons

Managers do not have to follow or abide by rules or laws. Managers are allowed to access personal emails, personal cell phones. Management is allowed to follow you from your residence.
There is constantly bullying by management to their subordinates. There is nothing done to fix this behavior. This environment is corrupt and toxic. You are expected to do whatever it takes to make your supervisors look better. Even if it means lying and falsifying documents. There is no recourse for the coorporate bullying that is has been allowed to continue.
Territory is huge, only get paid for anything over thirty miles. This company will quibble over the smallest things.
Morale is constantly low, there is a constant threat of layoffs.
You are expected to have a laptop, a cell phone ,a printer, wifi and they pay you for none of this. You are expected to store and transport huge POP for multiple accounts. Supervisors have the ability to see on your IPad where you are every minute of every day. They can pull up a map and pin point exactly where you are, any minute of the day.
Whatever they offer as a wage demand at least twenty five percent more. They will try and undercut you at every turn, and raises are a joke. I wish I could give this company less then one star.

    Advice to Management

This company was great until about two years ago. Which is quite a shame
Too many people get promoted because they lied and sucked up to the right people.
Management needs to Listen to your people. When problems are brought to your attention they need to be addressed. There is a feeling that management is allowed to do whatever they want with no consequences. It doesn't matter the proof you have , management and HR won't listen. They sweep your issues under the rug. There is some huge ethical and legal issues that need to be addressed but has not been addressed yet.
There has been huge turnover in the last year. Management should look a little more closely as to why there is such huge turnovers in the last year or two.
Hopefully management will read this and deal with the few managers that are breaking all the rules and make it great again.

I have been working at Mattel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and time off is plentiful... onsite childcare, gym, cafeteria.

    Cons

Management, from the CIO down are the epitome of the good old boy network. Short sighted and profit driven treatment of employees

    Advice to Management

Start from the top down and educate the management team on how to treat employees.

    Pros

Half day Fridays are a pro if your schedule allows. Strong core brands. Designers are creative and collaborative with eachother.

    Cons

Designers are treated like work horses. Not allowed to explore creative paths freely. Lack of innovation. Upper management lacks direction.

    Advice to Management

Time to shake it up. Barbie sales are down. Figure it out.

I have been working at Mattel full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The human resources department was very friendly. My coworker and non Mattel team were great and very friendly.

    Cons

Management was very misunderstanding about the quality of their training procedures. They do not understand nor care that people learn at different rates of speed. If you ask questions you will get slapped on the wrist for asking them.
If you ask questions about format you were yelled at.
If you asked the manager to give you training materials then they would respond "if I have to take the time to make you a training guide then I'm better off doing the process myself." This statement makes the person being trained feel uncomfortable.

    Advice to Management

Please revaluate your training procedures and onboarding process. If you hire a manager that doesn't have time to train then you are setting up new hires for failure. Also please put in place a manager that has patience and an understanding that people learn at different rates of speed.

I worked at Mattel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Half day fridays, free toys, creative, great location. Great events that if you are a little social you will meet lots of different people from different departments.

    Cons

Lots of back stabbing and mean people, constant shake ups, hard to get promoted, extreme overtime which reduces your pay rate and your dignity to that of a minimum wage employee or less. Unfortunately, if you are sadistic and condescending with a huge ego that just wants to continue to make a point, you will go far. Nice people will be laid off or humiliated.

    Advice to Management

Probably impossible to fix at this point.

I worked at Mattel full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Fun toys, talented people, charitable organization, great location, iconic brands, could be the worlds best company to work for if culture can be fixed

    Cons

Probably worst culture in any company I know of. Very weak management w good old boys, highly political, too many VPs, SVPs who suck up half the G&A while company is focusing on shaving nickels and cheapening toys every year

    Advice to Management

    Not sure where to begin

I worked at Mattel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You can leave work at 1:30 on Friday's if work is done. Generous with company holidays. There are some great leaders in the company. Good benefits.

    Cons

The company culture is extremely broken. The leaders and executives do not lead with the culture. This has been an ongoing issue for years. Employees voices are not heard, and there are tons of politics to work up the ladder. Retention rate is extremely low for millennials. The health and wellbeing of employees are under appreciated (it will take 6 months to get ergonomic assistance).

    Advice to Management

Redefine the company culture, lead with it, and implement employee resources to keep the culture alive. Listen to your employees and act on their needs.

I worked at Mattel full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Mattel still remains to be one of biggest toy company in the world but no longer #1. great benefits include maternity, healthcare, and onsite daycare. great resources and established process with in-house manufacturing system and compatible costing. big brands.

    Cons

They DO NOT value people. employees are easily replaceable and HR is on management side. even though they may have great health care, the work environment was super toxic with bad politics, unbalanced work hours for designers, and most of all, discrimination. You definitely need these healthcare benefit to balance. mine was spent on stress management and counseling. not worth it!

    Advice to Management

they still have very bad hierarchy and continue to believe in wrong people in management which won't last long. all the talented people already left and continue to do so. Until they have board of directors wake up to see that they need a fresh start, this is not a recommended place to commit your career.

    Pros

Half day Friday's and that's basically
About it. It's just the worst company ever.

    Cons

Where to start. This company does NOT care about its employees. They have the worst brands and no creativity. Management to HR is horrible and I highly suggest not accepting a job here. You are not a person to them, you are a number.
