I have been working at Mattel full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There is a great creative and inclusive community that works on the design side. Half day Fridays, good amount of company paid holidays and family oriented depending on your department.

    Cons

This really depends on which part of the company you work for.

    Advice to Management

I wish management cared more about the people under them. It seems like they treat you like you are lucky to work there and you are easily replaceable.

    Pros

Great brands and smart employees. There's a specific culture and if you fit in you will do well.

    Cons

Long work hours, varied Sr. Management abilities and silo'ed brand teams.

    Advice to Management

Clarify unified mission down to all levels, celebrate strengths of different employees and invest in strong management skills for managers.

  3. "Good, but lots of politics. Management changes lots and always fear of lay offs."

    Pros

Smart people. Good benefits. Good brands. Lots of potential. Work is interesting. Never boring. Overall a good place to work off the fear of layoffs wasn't always looming.

    Cons

People can't take ownership. Brand way too involved with everything. Brand and Marketing are at odds a lot. No real entertainment distribution. Too many meetings.

    Advice to Management

Trust people to know their job and expertise.

    Advice to Management

Less stagnation in turn around with standards and practices and marketing clients and some seniors in management

I have been working at Mattel full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Overall it's a great company with some extremely talented folks developing amazing toys. You get to work on incredible brands, and in many cases work alongside designers that impacted your childhood (there are a lot of "lifers" here). Compensation is fair, 401K match is generous, and if the company has a good year the bonus is pretty great. Also, can't beat half day Fridays all year.

    Cons

Lots of political nonsense at the top for the last few years. With every regime change it becomes Game of Thrones - which makes it difficult for mid-level and below to accomplish much as priorities and strategies are constantly shifting.

    Advice to Management

Act like the #1 toy company that you are. Lead instead of react. Invest in a long term strategy and stick to it. Stop chasing revenue by over-shipping every Q4 - you're killing product lines when you do.
