sometimes slow at rolling out communication

    Doesn't Recommend

I worked at Mattel as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Half-day Fridays
Working alongside some talented, influential people

    Cons

The HR department was a real let down, they only back up management and don't listen to anyone lower down.
Very high pressured environment, as though people want to catch you out.
I was given 3 managers in the space of 8 months with no support from HR, I was not able to make a proper relationship with a manager due to having so many.
One of my managers was extremely hard to work with and was generally an extremely poor manager - no support from HR.

    Advice to Management

Listen to people beneath you and recognise that everyone should be seen as equal. Don't be arrogant.

I worked at Mattel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay & benefits (if you are VP and above)
    Good dividend
There is still a lot of company loyalty (career-Mattel & Fisher Pricers)

    Cons

Matrix structure so no bosses or decisions yet lots of people who think they're are the boss
Too many meetings with no defined output
Toy companies are a dying breed, as digital and screens take over, Mattel needs to reinvent itself

    Advice to Management

Partner or invest with dynamic start-ups with relatable brands or tech offerings; the new female CEO, do a "back to the floor" exercise asking staff what they think needs improving. Reduce the staff numbers especially in Europe. Try and get bought by a bigger company.

    I worked at Mattel full-time

    Pros

Great brands, half day Fridays, good pay, good for networking.

    Cons

Dated offices, demotivated and over worked staff, constant layoff, management can push -arrogant - immature, no innovation or view on product development or strategy just sales focused, brands are getting dated, no budget for training, no travel budget, lazy people get promoted, management do nothing

    Advice to Management

Better recruitment process, appreciate your talent, stop focusing on sales/marketing and do more for innovations/manufacturing/process improvement. Watch out for arrogant managers who demotivate their team and drive fear.

    Cons

Moving up the ladder can be slow, as there's a lot of cooperate blah blah
