I have been working at Mattress Discounters full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Apart from the benefit that is great. Working in the showroom like I do affords you to pick the days you work on a weekly bases so long a 4 or 5 days schedule is meet. I used this provided opportunity to go back to school.

    Cons

As a commission based job, the uncertainty of what your take home at the end of each pay period can be unnerving.

    Advice to Management

    More communication

I have been working at Mattress Discounters full-time

    Pros

Monday-Saturday the store is open from 10-8 and Sunday12-6.
Most customers come in and have no clue where to begin to find a mattress for them other than price. It is a good feeling to assist the customers helping them find the perfect mattress for them in their budget.

    Cons

    Extended hours on holiday sales.
Store staff is paid a draw (that you need to pay back) if you do not make enough commission.

    Advice to Management

Hire District Managers from within. There are several District Managers that never worked in the store before. It is frustrating when your District Manager tries to tell you how to sell and they have never worked in the stores before. How can you be trained by someone that has never done your job before?

    Pros

The company offers ongoing product training, has fairly decent benefits, and one can work at both Mattress Discounters and Sleepy's stores, as both companies are now part of the Mattress Firm family.

    Cons

Extremely long hours and no work-life balance. The salespeople work on draw vs. commission..

    Advice to Management

Consider offering a base salary plus commission instead of draw vs. commission.

I worked at Mattress Discounters (More than a year)

    Pros

The opportunity to meet several nice people.
    Unlimited earnings potential.
    Flexibility

    Cons

Long Hours often extended past what is necessary. 11 hour shifts.
    No Weekends Off.
Company sets sales prices without also adjusting commissions.

    Advice to Management

Conduct evaluations based on the individual store and stop making decisions based on company and district averages.

    Pros

The pay is very high for the amount of work you have to put in. Their training program is very extensive and through.

    Cons

Their goals are very high and they are very strict about hitting them. Hours are long and upper management is very blunt and expect you to perform or you out oof there.

    Advice to Management

    Be more leinant.

    Pros

I was able to interact with customers on a personal level. Most time was spent reviewing information while other was teaching, instructing and responding to customer concerns.

    Cons

Management did not effectively train new hires leaving store employees to learn as they go, sometimes giving misinformation to customers leading to constant complaint calls. Management would refrain form speaking with customers concerning issues leaving salesperson and store management to fix problems without assistance. Stores needs repairs and would take months for management to approve.

    Advice to Management

Management need to take leadership courses and follow guidelines they set forth. Selection for management needs to be improve instead of promoting on the friend value system.
