Pros
The money can be great if you are in the right area.
Cons
No work/life balance. Required to work every single weekend and extended hours on holidays. Base pay is basically minimum wage and with so many locations next door to each other its hard to earn sales anymore.
Continue readingI appreciate you taking some time to leave a review. Based on feedback similar to yours, work/life balance has become a strict focus for the organization, passionately promoted by Steve Stagner himself. At the same time, optimizing our store portfolio has received much attentiveness over the past few months, ensuring our store locations and associates are successful in meeting the sleep needs of each of our guests. Thank you again for sharing your feedback, and I wish you nothing but the best!

Pros
Predictable income, coworkers are kind and have integrity. There's no physical labor involved and the job is so easy a monkey could do it. You also have strong job security as the company is constantly under staffed and almost no one is willing to do this job. There's plenty of opportunity to advance as high as you want and you have the ability to transfer anywhere in the country and someday the world.
Cons
If your coming from commissioned sales than you'll be very disappointed by the pay. The pay is predicable for a reason as they make it rather difficult to make bonuses or commission. The pay is offered as a contract of $2580 (variable by state)per month for a 'minimum' of 50 hours a week(5 consecutive 10 hour days or more). In the world of sales that's horrible pay. Its basically $12 an hour. If your thinking that your going to make more for being a great sales person think again! Many have tried, all have failed. Think its illegal to work alone for ten hours and not get overtime? Its not. Check your state workers rights. Theres an exemption just for us. MODs (new hires) make $12 an hour and work at a different store everyday and rarely hit budget. Store managers make the same pay but get a small modest bonus if they get close to budget. Area managers get paid the kinda the same but have the chance to make up to $150 per store more. There is no overtime, or other incentives whatsoever. There is ZERO work life balance. You WILL work open to close by yourself every single day no complaints that includes extra hours on weekends and holidays. You will receive no training. You'll be thrown in a store and than observed. The medical is pretty bad too. If your single it only costs 25% of your whole entire check. If you have a spouse and/or kids on your medical you'll barely get a check at all. Mattress firm ran all of the competition out of town and expanded to 35+ stores, some are even next door to each other. This means you see a customer every 6-8 hours if your lucky and the community hates you because your a monopoly that sales cheap beds. Your suppose to sell people on the idea of sleep yet you'll hardly ever have time to sleep yourself. Because you work alone your vulnerable to criminals. There's no alarms to hit if someone comes in to rob or hurt you. Next thing you know your single and have no friends because you never had time to hang out with anyone due to work. Even your family stops calling you. You gain weight and your health declines until your basically an automated salesperson waiting to die. At least they let you sleep when you die. If you must work here because your broke or have been between jobs a long time than do it but promise yourself that once you pay your bills and get some savings built up you'll quit. No excuses. Give it a max of two years and save every penny.

Need a job and money
Cons
The way the company operates. Your commission percentage is made off of the profit on the sale. So the representative is incentivized to charge more to the customer and is penalized to give discounts. In my area was very hypocritical. I was refused time off for my vacation I earned. If you need to call in sick I was told I have to show up to work and find somebody to cover. if you don't make your goal you will get fired. if you don't work 6 days a week you could get fired. You will work every holiday and every weekend with little to no support or resources. Bottom line they only care about the dollar and their corporate profit sharing. The warehouse in my area was not good. They could ruin your deal and disrespected us and the driver's had issues because it was outsourced and there were fights and was not good. My district manager made my job worse. I truly believe he was prejudiced toward his own race and his own gender. Could be they just want to recycle employees that way you never use your benefits. They don't care what kind of money you're making it's only about them the corporation. I think the tablets are so they can hire a minimum wage people and have them do a routine and then recycle them with somebody new. No comment to the employee you matter as nothing. Sanitizing and cleaning the store is a personal preference it's not a company held standard only in word not indeed. Yhe computer system not good.

Fairly low stress, but very long hours.
Sep 15, 2015 - Assistant Store Manager in Tampa, FLRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Very thorough training is provided to the sales force, which makes it easy to hit the ground running. Employees are promoted from within, typically based on performance. Co-workers at Mattress Firm are generally pretty friendly, and quick to offer help when needed. There isn't much of the cutthroat stuff that goes on in other sales environments. Work life is very autonomous. At times you'll be doubled up in a store, but often you work alone. At times, you may not see a single customer in a day, which leaves you with a lot of "down time".
Cons
Hours can be very long. Even longer on holidays. Expect to work 12 hour days over EVERY holiday weekend (minus T'giving and Xmas). Sometimes it seems that employees are not justly compensated for these extended hours. Employees earn a draw of $30,500/year. This equates to $800-$1000 twice a month after taxes (you don't get paid bi-weekly). Granted, you can earn a commission over and above your draw, but it's not easy to do. No matter what they tell you, 'work/life balance' and 'overtime' are not even concepts here. Competition is fierce for beds in this area. Mattress Firm will even open a new location across the street, or blocks away from an existing location. One location (the more successful one) will end up starving out the other one, and your paycheck can suffer tremendously. But the company is still making money, so who cares, right?? This job is best suited for folks who want a career later in life, or kids fresh out of school, who think $31k per year is a lot of money.

Pros
Good starting salary for the work you do. They also invest in training to make you a more efficient sales person. Most of the management team is accommodating when needed.
Cons
While you have a good starting salary, it can be difficult to move beyond what that you started with. Long hours and you have to work every weekend (but you can't expect otherwise for anything retail). ALL major holidays are mandatory to work (again this is the same for retail as a whole). There is no way to work part time which limits flexibility If it were possible to get a better work life balance or work part time I would have given more stars.
